I have been working at Coles part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Above average base wage (but poor penalty rates)
    - Something to get by
    - Reasonably flexible if working part time

    Cons

    - High turnover of management - I have seen approximately 5 store managers within the period of 2.5 years
    - Weak Enterprise Bargaining Agreement skewed in favour of the company
    - Low recognition of staff
    - Too much bureaucracy at the higher levels - things are dictated up the top, even though you, as a front line worker know certain things they want are completely wrong
    - Politics and personality

    Advice to Management

Cut out the politics, it's retail work - team acknowledgement is important, as well as providing feedback to staff

I worked at Coles part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Of all the retail jobs you could get, a supermarket is one of the better ones. You don't go home smelling like burgers.

    Cons

It can get really boring, doing the same thing every day. Not much around this.

    Advice to Management

No advice to add, it's been a while since I worked there, and may not apply.

I worked at Coles as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable workplace, usually nice team members in store to work with

    Cons

HQ aggressively pushes for efficiency, down to 'task per second'. Will cut hours in wages quarterly budget without explanation, still expected to do same tasks therefore the department manager will pick up the hours themselves. I frequently worked 16hr+ shifts, average day was 12hrs (in 'good' stores where nothing badly needs improving). Any pushback about wages will result in upper management saying it's because you don't push your team/manage your time efficiently, will not discuss the awfulness that is SDR.

    Advice to Management

There comes a time where pushing for efficiency does the opposite and brings team morale down. Just because someone is on contract does not mean you get to work them like slaves. Soon Australia will wake up to the exploitative nature of some middle management contracts and Coles will be a prime example of it.

    Pros

The hours at Coles are flexible and part time work here is great when studying full time elsewhere. Can learn the basics of professional life here.

    Cons

Not always treated fantastically by upper staff. Fairly repetitive work that does not really provide a lot of opportunity for development.

    Advice to Management

Connect on a more personal level with workers, give opportunities to contribute in a greater sense. Will result in a greater work ethic from staff.

I worked at Coles part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people (become like a second family)
Easy work (generally complete the same tasks everyday)
Offering to pay for staff to do a first aid course.
Not the worst place to work. (McDonalds was much worse)

    Cons

No work life balance (worked every weekend)
Not enough hours available (could only offer 12 hours a week)
No advancement opportunities (was there for 3 years and kept being asked by supervisors why I hadn't got supervisor numbers yet. I asked the csm but got told they would come. They never did and newer people would get them over me.
Some people make friends with the manager so they can be lazy and talk instead of doing their job.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier for staff to have time off, I missed my best friends birthday 3 years in a row because it was late November and I worked every Saturday night for 2 and a half years. It was too hard to try and find someone to cover the shift, no one wanted to work 6 - 10pm on a Saturday. Allow more of a work life balance, would have preferred to work every second weekend. Offer advancement opportunities to older staff first if asked I would have been happy to open or close after others had left. Don't only offer advancement opportunities to those friendly with the csm.
