I worked at Coles full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Always looking to promote lower level staff if they show initiative

    Cons

Long hours if you're a salary worker, it's just expected. No rewards for saving money or hours, it's just expected.

    Advice to Management

Invest in training new managers. EG, don't just throw them in the deep end after they were just a grocery assistant the week prior.

    Pros

I just got the job at Mount Sheridan Coles, my managers are very understanding. they even let me go to my holiday even I'm just new in the job. So happy that I have good and very kind managers.

    Cons

I really want to be in part time position but because of their bad past experience ,you have to be casual first to see if you are good worker which is very fair enough before they give you a permanent part time position.

    I worked at Coles part-time

    Pros

Good pay, flexible hours, the SDA union kept Coles accountable.

    Cons

Poor management at this particular store, 70% of colleagues were terrible to work with.

I have been working at Coles full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Employment stability working with a large company.
    They pay you on time.
Really have nothing else to add.
    At all.

    Cons

    Too many to list.
Bullying, gossiping, favourites, no work/life balance, contracts changed every few months. Given all close shifts if you don't suck up to manager. No further learning opportunities. Very boring doing checkouts for 25 years, yet others are given other depts to try. RSI from repetitive work. Injuries from trying to work quickly because you never have enough time. Head office make new guidelines that are unrealistic for store team. Head office cut hours and customers abuse checkout staff all day. Head office motto=it works on paper, so it's good for us! Spend hours trying to replace shifts. New one team system isn't used correctly.

    Advice to Management

Lead by example. Actually come and work in each department. Coles asks the store manager to run the service dept 1 day a year. I've never seen the manager actually do it.

I have been working at Coles part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've worked at Coles for 10 years. They were flexible with my hours when I was in high school and TAFE. If you bug the right person enough you can get a decent base roster.
You are trained on the job.
You can make friends with regular customers.
The work itself is simple, however finding the time to do it all with a smile on your face is the hard part.
There are opportunities to advance through the company. It is competitive so be ready to work hard!

    Cons

Their expectations are difficult to reach in the time frame given. I have seen countless coworkers clock off and go back to work to finish a task. (Please never do this, it creates the illusion that you can get 7 hours of work done in 4 hours)
Some people get stuck doing the same repetitive jobs and get RSI injuries.
If you are a casual employee, the hours will be unpredictable. You may be rostered to work 6 hours one week and 32 hours the next. (Tip: be available to cover sickies when ever you can, you are more likely to be given extra hours)
I have seen bullying be an issue.
Service Department is run with bare minimum staff, sometimes you are given extra hours only to have managers lower your stores projections so you don't get the extra checkout staff. Customers can get aggressive in queues. Other departments have to come up and help serve people. Which would be fine if it was only for 5-10 minutes but it can go up to 45-60 minutes.

    Advice to Management

Store Mangers need to be more transparent with Head Office, stop polishing the stores up when Regional/State Managers show up, you should give us the time to make the stores always look amazing.
Identify when staff are clocking off and continue working and do something about it.
Don't change sales projections, to keep REM low.

I worked at Coles full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of nice people in stores.
    Learnt a lot
Flexibility to work at stores and from home
    IT department responsive and helpful
    Great Head Office Christmas party!
Lot's of opportunity if willing to work long hours

    Cons

    Frequent changes in direction/measures/kpi's
    Cut throat
Very long hours expected especially by those working in stores
    Very high stress environment

    Advice to Management

Consider peoples lives outside of work, especially those working extremely hard both physically and mentally to just feed their families and pay a mortgage. Reduce the gap in pay between those in stores and management.
