Pros
Benefits and work-life balance are quite good at the College Board
Cons
Leadership could use a refresh with fairer accountability and less 'who you're connected to'.

Wonderful opportunity to gain research AND policy experience
Aug 4, 2017 - Public Policy Intern in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The College Board internship allowed me to pursue my interest in policy while also honing my research skills. As a doctoral student in education policy, I wanted an internship that would allow me to move forward with my research while simultaneously gaining real knowledge of the education policy world in DC. This internship allowed me to do that. Wendell (the internship director) and his team were incredibly supportive and flexible. They were very attentive and ensured that I had a valuable experience while also serving their needs and goals. I left the internship with a stronger understanding of policy while also gaining two new paper ideas.
Cons
Wendell pushes you to engage and network outside of the College Board. If this makes you uncomfortable, it might be a con. But I found it to be incredibly beneficial.

Great for most people
Aug 16, 2019 - Cloud Software Engineer in Reston, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
It definitelt depends team to team but most of my peers in the mid 20s to early 30s love working at college board. Good benefits and good culture most ways for our team. Very flexible work from home. You can make up hours on your own time. Most staff have very flexible dress code as well.
Cons
Wish the compensation was a little more competitive. Doesnt really feel like im contributing anything as a non profit. Doesnt apply to me but higher priority project teams seem to be fairly toxic with a lot of finger pointing and pressure.

We appreciate the feedback. And work hard to build a culture that’s flexible and helps all employees get great work done. As a mission-based non-profit, all of our work is rooted in our strategic goals and purpose to clear a path for all students. We care deeply about the impact we’re making – and know it’s important that all of our colleagues know the value of their contributions to our mission. -- Karl D'Souza

Great place to work despite a few shortfalls.

The fabulous benefits package is what keeps most people at the College Board. LOTS of time off which includes vacation, personal, and sick days. The retirement plan is second to none.
Cons
Career growth is somewhat limited. If your manager thinks you are an asset to your department, he/she will try and prevent you from transferring to another department and still keep you at the same pay and level. Secondly, I think the salary compensation could be somewhat higher especially for the non Directors. The yearly raises don't even keep up with inflation. Lastly, expect TONS of meetings. In a given week, I can have over 10 hours of meetings. Other than that, it's a good place to work.

Pros
I really love the mission of the College Board. I think that often times when employees are deep in the weeds of the work, it's difficult to remember that students are on the other side of the amazing work that everyone is committed to. The culture in the office was great- the people who work at the College Board alone is a reason to work there! Remote work has been a little different but the culture has stayed in tact for the most part.
Cons
A couple of things I've noticed- 1) the College Board operates like a collection of smaller companies. Each individual department runs the operation differently and with different leadership styles, largely divided up by product. This is good and bad because if you move departments, you get a fresh perspective and get to work on a completely different product. However the downside is lack of consistency. 2) the salaries start off really competitive when you first come to work there but they don't stay competitive.

Good benefits; inefficient and dysfunctional organization
Feb 24, 2014 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- good benefits - mission is wonderful - most of the people who work at the College Board are good people who care about education. - stable (people stay at College Board for years - probably due to the great benefits)
Cons
- leadership is not aligned (no sense of a cohesive leadership team) - morale is terrible (employees complain constantly) - bureaucracy gets in the way of getting work done. Leaders are able to pull strings and get around the bureaucracy everyone else has to go through. - bad place for young professionals who are hungry for challenging and engaging work - this organization moves very slowly

Pros
College Board is a great organization to work for. The people were great and very helpful. The organization has great retirement benefits.
Cons
Room to move up the ladder can be limited. Promotions usually come from the higher level positions

Out of 0 to 100, 100 being the best, I think that my expierence ranges between 60 and 75.

A major pro with working with the College Board is the benefits package. You are really taken care of regarding health, 401(k), etc.
Cons
A con to working with the College Board is that sometimes you might feel overworked and underpayed. There is a large gap in pay levels between the various levels at The College Board. This makes for a situation where the person who are at or near the bottom dont feel appreciated.

The College Board is an excellent organization. They have a clear mission and vision statement, and the management is fully supportive of their employees. Onboarding was amazing, very organized and informative.
Cons
I have not found any "cons" yet. Expectations are clear, sufficient resources are provided to my job, and management encourages innovation.
