    Positive Outlook

I have been working at College of American Pathologists full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

As a new team member, I'm already making a significant impact and advancing the specialty of pathology. I touch many segments of the organization and I know the work I'm doing is helping to improve people's health.

Many of the employees I've met are enthusiastic and passionate about the CAP and the work we do. They're extremely smart and always willing to share their knowledge cross-functionally.

    Cons

As the CAP adapts to meet external demands and pressures, it may not feel like the family-oriented culture some remember. Even as we grow and navigate these changes, the culture is still warm, collaborative and collegial.

    Advice to Management

Continue to engage employees and reinforce how our roles contribute to the strategic objectives of the organization.

    Pros

Co workers can be resources as they have long tenures, know they will not grow any further, know they have hit the ceiling

    Cons

HRBPs are not advocates for the employees growth or opportunity, play to managers poor opinions, employees skills are suffocated. HR leadership supports the efforts and drives the direction.

    Advice to Management

Until Leadership changes, no good efforts for brilliant talent will be accepted.

    Cons

All about the incentive, have to complete VP goals before you complete your own, all about the incentive

    Advice to Management

Board members are for show, COO has control over the company, CEO is a follower not a leader, VPs have no interest in your growth

I have been working at College of American Pathologists full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits, good internal training offered by HR. Many long term employees and MANY good non-management workers who are team players and hard workers.

    Cons

The biggest con at the CAP is upper management that is incompetent. A lot of favoritism, too much management and not enough workers. Too many managers of no one and very top heavy management that does not listen to the needs of the employees. Tendency to push technology into the production state before fully tested and kinks worked out causing problems and delays on the working class who have to deal with multiple time consuming work- arounds. This just ends up being added stress on the workers. Many employees, even those who have been at CAP long term are unhappy with management decisions that make no sense.

    Advice to Management

LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN to your lower level staff....to those that are on the front lines with the customers. Get out of the offices and meeting rooms and actually sit with the workers and see the frustrations and problems that are dealt with on a daily basis. Do not show favoritism to staff and departments. Realize that just because someone has been there a long time does not make them upper management material. Promote those who deserve it, not those who simply have the years in. Biggest pet peeve of the company. Terminate those that don't make the grade...don't promote them or design positions around them. Get rid of some of the "non-managing" managers. Too top heavy. Notice and acknowledge non-management contributions and frustrations.

I have been working at College of American Pathologists full-time

    Pros

Great benefits. HR does good job showing employees are appreciated, however management quickly erases any appreciation the company shows their employees. Great pay, work/life balance, ok vacation and holiday time off, yearly bonus if you don't get a bad review, they let some staff work from home. Great 401k matching and additional contribution at end of year.

    Cons

Your manager can make or break you, and varies depending on what dept you end up in. Inconsistant perks from dept to dept. No to little opportunity for advancement either. Employees sit in same job with no promotions for years or title increase. Lots of new hires are relatives and friends of employees are not qualified for jobs. Management is hired or moved in place because of senority or a friend recommendation and have no business managing people. Words such as bipolar, crazy, moody are used to describe mgmt. Very little system support, creates a lot of manual work. The company does not accept change well and they like to do things like they've also done them. Discouraged from thinking outside the box. Managers can be demeaning and bullies. Takes a long time to be vested in benefits listed above.

    Advice to Management

Weed out your bad management, it causes low employee morale. People walk around the company like they hate their jobs and hate being there. Senority doesn't always make a good manager. Employees don't feel appreciated or respected.
