I have been working at College of Lake County part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Generous vacation time. Good work life balance

    Cons

It's a EDU. Slow to change. Not real inventive. Seems overly drawn to supporting the underprivileged.

    Advice to Management

    Don't be a follower....be a leader in trends

I worked at College of Lake County part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People were friendly, and they were willing to help. This job was my first job in different country, I was frustrated by new environment but they helped me through

    Cons

Employees were friendly, but some of the students were not. Be prepared for those students who tries to make fun of you

    Advice to Management

    You barely see them

I worked at College of Lake County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of time off and good benefits. Comfortable working environment. Not a lot of micromanagement.

    Cons

No matter if you are strong employee or poor employee, everyone gets the same annual increase per the boards vote - average 2.5-3%. There are no raises based on merit. As a person in a sales position, this was not a motivator. Also, lack of funding from the state has caused department cut-backs. The department I was in used to have 3 sales people and when one left 3 or so years ago, they never replaced her position. Yet we were expected to bring in more sales than when there were 3 people there but with only 2 people!

    Advice to Management

Be honest about why you let a person go - budget reductions. I was terminated after 6 years as a good employee who was successful for a bogus reason (at will employer) and they turned around and posted my position at $21,000 less a year! I never received any written or verbal warnings in my 6 years there. It was obviously a financially motivated decision.

    Pros

Flexibility with scheduling your life around work

    Cons

    Very few opportunities for advancement

    Advice to Management

Create an incentive program for adjunct faculty

I have been working at College of Lake County part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, great learning environment, is able to make mistakes and learn from them, hands on learning and what we might encounter in the field

    Cons

Wish student workers were payed more than the minimum wage. It makes it hard to pay of school debt while living on that wage.

    Advice to Management

Pay your student workers depending on how difficult the work is, example desk work can be minimum like library assistant, while HVAC or automotive kind of work should be higher

I have been working at College of Lake County part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You'll be friends with your fellow ambassadors. Pretty fun job to do.

    Cons

Inconsistent shifts. No guarantee for hours. Max of 20 hours per week. Must be a student to apply.

    Advice to Management

Employees get lunged down their throats, constant miscommunication from supervisor with leads. Employees for using phones during off times when the leads use theirs constantly. Employees yelled at for not coming in for scheduled shifts after employees have already cleared it with leads and made sure it was okay.

    Pros

If you love teaching, this is a great community college to teach for. Students are interested in the material.
Support staff are great folks: librarians, secretaries, deans, IT, maintenance and grounds crews.
Tenured professors are not your bosses, even though they would like to think they are. Assistant deans are.

    Cons

Some tenured professors are very catty. They will throw you under the bus right after you've done all they've asked, even if it wasn't fair to other students. Watch your back and you'll do fine.

    Advice to Management

Recognize a problem before you offer a tenure to it.

I worked at College of Lake County full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and opportunities to move to other departments. Close parking for staff and secure environment overall. Compensation is competitive.

    Cons

Financial aid office is not managed well. New employees are not trained and students get awarded very late leaving them with balances. Financial aid staff is rude to students that ask questions.

    Advice to Management

Replace management and train new employees.
