I have been working at College of the North Atlantic Qatar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful Campus; Students are a joy to teach; Travel opportunities from Qatar are limitless, cultural opportunities to live in Middle East, opportunities to make friends with many wonderful people both inside and outside the college, possibility for tax-free salary

    Cons

No salary increases in over 15 years! Accommodations are out-dated and there's no choice as to where one lives, top-down management style with many incompetent people in leadership and decision-making positions, low faculty morale, faculty not given any academic freedom. People get fired if they're deemed "trouble makers", only short-term contracts of 1-2 years given. Many people are just sucking as much money out of the job as they can, letting standards slip and accountability fall out the window. And things are about to get a whole lot worse!

    Advice to Management

This higher-ed institution pours more money into marketing and public relations and endless "centre this" and "centre that" - if they put as much focus on high quality teaching and learning, this would be a much different place. It's not students-first or teaching-first. The most important part of what higher-ed is supposed to do always seems to get left out.

I worked at College of the North Atlantic Qatar (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Excellent facilities
Excellent opportunities for travel within the Gulf region and Europe
    Reasonable pay
Interesting culture and mix of nationalities
    Reasonable accommodations
    Good instructors

    Cons

CNAQ is so dishonest. The language of instruction is in English. About half of the students enter with sufficient English language competency to enter a typical western institution while the other half require EFL training. Those who require EFL training typically graduate within the usual length of time plus one year without learning enough English to enter a typical western institution. In other words half or more of the graduates are incompetent! Naturally graduates are told they received a world class education. CNAQ bullies anyone who does not promote the lie.

    Advice to Management

Tell the Qataris to invest in English immersion at the grade school level. Graduates will be better equipped to succeed at CNAQ.

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at College of the North Atlantic Qatar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Money. However, there has been no pay raise in many years and the weak dollar (salaries are paid in Canadian funds) means a significant pay cut for those still employed.
    2. Holidays.
    3. Benefits - especially for people who remained Canadian residents (they got a pension, healthcare, schooling for up to 2 kids i think and of course a villa for families)
    4. Facilities.

    Cons

    1. Their convoluted/ multi-party organizational structure makes management a challenge and change difficult/slow.
    2. Opaque decision making/hiring practices.
    3. Nepotism still persists in hiring practices.
    4. Low morale.

    Advice to Management

    Make hiring practices more transparent.
Hire qualified academics with specific and relevant educational backgrounds to lead departments so as to implement sound curriculum and testing.
Make relevant, respected M.A.s mandatory for all academic positions.

    Poor executive management in Canada
    Restrictions on freedoms in Qatar

    Negative Outlook

I worked at College of the North Atlantic Qatar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friends you make and opportunities to travel

    Cons

Lack of honest, transparent leadership both in Qatar and NL. Its the "old boys club" and friends of leadership were treated better than those that were not connected. Housing is disgraceful and unsafe and the leadership team hides behind the "landlord" ie. refuse to do anything about unsafe living conditions. Schooling options for employee's children are abhorrent! Qatar Canadian School gets worse every year. There are much better places to work in the region - don't chose CNA-Q!!! You can make as good a salary at Canadian colleges - you don't need to move here and be treated horribly.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with people - will the college exist beyond 2015-16???? Lets see some ethical leadership!
