Works hard to create a great employee experience

      Pros

This is a company that has gone through a lot of change in the past few years with M&A. Now a part of Raytheon Technologies, Collins Aerospace has a lot of the right people and employee-focused ambitions to become a great place to work. The current President, Steve Timm, has a long history of integrity and concern for others. He grew up at the company and has the dedication needed to see Collins through the toughest market challenges in the history of aerospace. Look for the company to continue to grow their programs around diversity and employee engagement because they understand what's needed to attract and keep top talent. They are looking for new talent to lead their HR organization after a few dismal years with highly political, personally ambitious leaders in that spot.

      Cons

As with all companies, it matters who your boss is. And for Collins, it also matters which heritage organization (pre-UTC/Raytheon mergers) you work for within Collins Aerospace - Rockwell Collins or UTAS. It will feel very different depending on which one. There are pros and cons either way, but heritage Rockwell Collins is more likely to have better managers from an employee-focused culture shift they executed particularly well about 4 years ago. Also watch out for a large degree of bureaucracy (at 70K employees, it's expected), but don't let that keep you from speaking up and making things better - people will listen.

Great Benefits and decent pay only mask the poor management

      Pros

Great Benefits and pay is decent

      Cons

Parking is awful. Having to walk 4/10 of a mile to get to the plant is unreal. Tardiness could be less with better parking. Hard to plan anything beyond work due to inconsistent work hours beyond daily 8hrs. Saturdays are up in air til last minute as well. Raises and advancements are based on tier system. HR is almost non existent; everything is contracted out. Payroll company is notorious for errors. Workplace is drama and very unorganized and management sweeps it under the rug and focus's on the vanity instead of the accuracy and quality. Employee training is "you will figure it out" and not consistent

      poorly managed

Apr 8, 2021 - Technician in Wilsonville, OR

      Pros

      The pay is fairly good.

      Cons

      * Benefits are garbage. High-deductible insurance; bonuses were taken away two years ago and given to upper-level executive staff: time off is minimal. * Morale is in the toilet--managers won't deal with personnel issues, they simply ignore them. Toxic personalities, or employees who do next to nothing, or the surprisingly incompetent, are allowed to run amok and there are no consequences. I was told years ago that 'you can never be fired from Collins' which has proven to be mostly correct. * Nepotism at the management level has become routine. Most companies try to prevent couples from working together, but Collins actually promotes this by hiring husband/wife pairs, even to work in the same department--stated qualifications are not a requirement. * The latest change has been the sudden announcement that breaks and lunches are restricted to very specific times, so now everyone goes at the same time. While still in the middle of a pandemic. It's so strict that breaks take importance over production operations, which makes no sense at all. There were no problems with breaks and lunches, so this is an odd decision. * Multiple mergers over the past few years have adversely affected benefits and pay raises; and managers are rotated regularly, so there's a never-ending supply of inexperienced supervisors, and naive and costly attempts to fix production issues. * In general, not recommended except as a springboard to something else.

      Pros

I was given a couple tasks that were well within my skills set to accomplish.

      Cons

You feel like a very small part in a large machine, and your responsibilities are very focused, and sometimes drudgery.

      Something for everyone

      May 1, 2021 - Senior Quality Engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The large reach of the company means pivoting to a new career or relocating for family needs is an accessible option. They are good about offering training and development opportunities for career progression. Recent emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion is a good step in the right direction

      Cons

Not unified because of the succession of mergers/acquisitions. They are working on this, but the experience can be highly variable from site to site.
