I worked at Colorado PERA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good pay and good benefits (if you can stand staying)

    Cons

Misrepresented job duties, negative culture, very politically conservative, poor management, ridiculously high workload. Also was not told when I accepted the job that my social security benefits would be reduced and I was too old to accumulate a decent PERA retirement.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with new hires about the job duties, workload, and ramifications of not paying into Social Security, especially if they've not worked for a PERA employer in the past. Do not leave training to another Benefits Counselor. This person badmouthed the management and the organization and set a very negative tone for the new hires.

They do shady practices, they're liars and you have to dress like a 1960's housewife!

I have been working at Colorado PERA full-time

    Pros

    Great benefits, and nice people.

    Cons

Hard to move up, company values longevity more than ability. Not much opportunity for pay increases.

    Advice to Management

Cut the dead weight, too many employees are checked out and bring down the moral of their teammates.

I worked at Colorado PERA full-time

    Pros

Good benefits were the only plus.

    Cons

Middle management does not know what they are doing.

    Advice to Management

Reported errors are ignored and discrimination is tolerated. Incompetent supervisors are defended to protect the institution.

    I worked at Colorado PERA

    Pros

Good benefits with underground parking. Some of the people are good to work with. Gym at the facility.

    Cons

A lot of older unproductive baby boomers holding the company back and bankrupting the pension.

    Advice to Management

Look at where the most turnover is and then maybe ask "why are the younger most productive people always leaving this department"?

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Colorado PERA for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible department heads allow you to take internship in your own direction. PM's are skilled and experienced, almost every PM has an MBA,CFA and/or CAIA. Broad exposure to many different investment vehicles.

    Cons

Some administrative burdens but no worse than any other organization. 8% of salary goes into pension which does not work well for Interns.

    Advice to Management

Keep the flexibility of the internship. I really enjoyed working with managers to create projects. For internships try and cut some of the training.

    Pros

Work life balance, flexible work schedule

    Cons

backstabbing managers, no room for growth, very egocentric employees, poorly managed portfolio, very few of the PMs have any real financial experience

    Advice to Management

The Board of Trustees should replace management with competent individuals
