I worked at Colorado Springs Utilities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, professional development opportunities, good training dept.

    Cons

Management style was atrocious...it was amazing to see how managers were allowed to operate as bullies, creating hostile work environments and demeaning employees. Creative thinkers were ostracized and pushed out. If you're not a robot don't expect to last long.

    Pros

It was a laid back environment and they took pretty good care of you. Good perks and benefits.

    Cons

Typical government job. Not always the most interesting work and they could probably operate with half as many people.

I worked at Colorado Springs Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent for long term employment and retirement opportunities.

    Cons

Poor understanding of how to communicate well with employees. Ineffective at staying current in technology and implementing modern solutions in a timely manner.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to spend a little time talking to the grass roots employees and understanding not only what the real issues are but how to effectively implement solutions.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are better than many employers and the employees are very involved in philanthropic activities and volunteering in the community.

    Cons

Lack of skilled leaders and a sense of entitlement is abundant. Inefficient processes lead to a certain level of complacency and job dissatisfaction for high performers.

I worked at Colorado Springs Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Previously solid organization, community-owned, flexible environment.

    Cons

Politics of the local community, no support from core leadership (politically motivated), complete loss of vision. HR is vindictive.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of employees - they are the frontline to the customer-owners.

I have been working at Colorado Springs Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place to be for job security and benefits. The people tend to have a positive outlook and want to be part of the community.

    Cons

Leadership does not support the employees and does not abide by a consistent behavioural standard. New supervisors are left to "fend for themselves" with no direction or support.

    Advice to Management

Establish organization wide communications so every area is consistent and knows what the goal is. Do not pick a random number for headcount reductions. Work on smart solutions that make sense. If this means a rate increase, then so be it! There is only so much you can whip a horse before it turns up dead. (Reducing headcount in an already stressed and overloaded environment will send employees over the edge and unable to cope... I predict increase in ailments for employees.)
