I have been working at Colorado Springs Utilities (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Great people!
    - Employee development and training opportunities galore.
    - Health, ergonomics, and safety are important values to the culture and it shows, which is a good thing.
    - A corrective action process that makes it possible to learn from mistakes without getting fired. -(You have to work hard at being an @$$ to get fired.)
    - Competitive benefits package.
    - Opportunity to work with some of the best professionals in the business. CSU hires "the best of the best" and I was proud to work there for almost 10 years.

    Cons

Most CSU employees I have met are happy employees. Happy employees means low turnover. Getting hired at CSU is no longer about who you know. You must follow the strict application process, which can be extensive. You must be patient, creative, go above and beyond, and work very hard on developing yourself to advance to senior positions. CSU's very visible public profile means political correctness is paramount.

    Advice to Management

In my experience, CSU managers work hard to support and develop their employees while striving to meet business objectives. This can be a difficult balance, but I had no complaints.

    Pros

The opportunities for Engineering work and advancements are good at this utility. The people are friendly and easy to work with and the management is easy to talk with. I would recommend this employer to others. The workload is interesting without being overloaded.

    Cons

Due to the economy, spending is currently at a minimum making some issues hard to finance. Also, there is currently a hiring freeze.

    Advice to Management

The company is well run compared to others I've worked with.

I worked at Colorado Springs Utilities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Rewarding local government job with great benefits

    Cons

Understaffed for many positions, making work/life-balance difficult to maintain

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on inappropriate relationships between different levels of supervision; my experience was that the cozy state of the chain of command made it difficult for lower-level employees to resolve important issues or to be more actively involved in providing input on current operations.

I have been working at Colorado Springs Utilities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent job stability and true respect for work life balance across the organization.

    Cons

Continuous process improvement needs to become more than partially adopted. There are opportunities to realize efficiency but out dated policy/practice gets in the way sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Push for greater accountability and impactful leadership. Hold your management team accountable for making solid hiring decisions and building high performing work teams.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

The skill level of the technical craft employees is extremely high. Customer service is a top priority. The compensation and benefits package is competitive. Although there are some concerns with the performance management process, this is an organization that takes the time to address performance in a way that focuses on both the positive and the areas that need improvement. Many organizations do not invest the time to hold regular reviews and have performance discussions. Employees at this organization truly care about their customers and community. Strong volunteerism.

    Cons

Pockets of leadership about to exit creates some uncertainty and there is some disengagement. The organizational structure likely needs an overhaul as some groups are split and combined in ways that aren't effective and have been tailored to the current leadership. Pockets of employee entitlement and unrealistic expectations about how a business should operate. Politics can sometimes get in the way of long-term strategic business planning.

    Advice to Management

More strategic, less reactive. Make the tough decisions about the long-standing issues you know need to be addressed. There is a lot of talented leadership but the volume of urgent issues overwhelms even the best leaders.

    Pros

Good starting salary & benefits. This company mostly cares about their employees; although the Customer Service dept has the attitude that everyone is replaceable.

    Cons

Working with a bunch of women....way too much gossip & hearsay. Even among supervisors! Supervisors are chosen based upon how much they kiss-up to management. NOT kidding

    Advice to Management

Put experienced workers in positions they deserve & STOP the good-ol-boy network
