I have been working at Colton Joint Unified School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Management listens to its staff and works hard to keep everyone happy. The district does its best to stay current on technology and training its staff on teaching practices.

    Cons

Having to take time out of the classroom for trainings is tough. Wish they built in more professional development days.

I worked at Colton Joint Unified School District part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pros of the position is that I was one-on-one with multiple students in a classroom setting. It gave me tons of first hand experience and let me be social in a professional setting.

    Cons

I started to work for them before I was seventeen and I couldn't be paid until I turned eighteen. Other than that, the work does conflict with your school schedule from time to time, but they always work with your schedule. It was also part time work, so you really didn't make much.

    Advice to Management

Have someone who is looking for more to do become the coordinator rather than having someone who has way to much on there plate.

    Poor management
    Unprofessional
    Poor communication
    Negligent about student safety
Indifferent toward promoting quality learning environments
    Office politics
Lack of workplace and upward mobility
    Favoritism
    Low wages
    Toxic environment
    High turnover

    Advice to Management

Promote accountability and student safety. Stop shoving complaints about misconduct under the rug.

I have been working at Colton Joint Unified School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great team collaboration, always feel comfortable asking for ideas through district. Great support from administrators. Great peers, and sense of community.

    Cons

The biggest hurdle to get over is the ever changing curriculum ( or new acronym, or gadget, or program) it does feel as though the district throws money at different things to see what sticks.

    Advice to Management

Be open to new ideas. Details are important, COMMUNICATION is important.

I have been working at Colton Joint Unified School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Small class size (20-1 in k-3 and 30-1 in grades 4-6). Fully paid benefits.

    Cons

Teaching to the state test - no time to do fun things. Teachers given a daily schedule outlining when to teach each subject - little to no flexibility.

    Pros

Benefits are great. Depending on which site you work at, you feel like a family.

    Cons

Politics, favoritism, and nepotism play huge roles in the district so promotions on merit are rather rare. Not flexible with change. If someone doesn't like you and they are friends with board members, expect to be let go soon. Huge employee turnover because of these reasons.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your hard working employees, not just the ones who are related to your bosses.

I have been working at Colton Joint Unified School District full-time

    Pros

Benefits and flexibility if you are non-management since you are protected by a union.

    Cons

Difficult to move up, change is not acceptable to most, promotions are political and not based on performance.

    Advice to Management

Hire people in management positions who are not teachers. Need a good balance. Placing teachers in management positions with no business training/background is the reason why old processes are in place.
