I have been working at Columbia Forest Products full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    •Flexible schedule:
◦(a plus for me as a working mom) – I can set my hours, and can come and go as needed to cover personal and company errands, appointments, events, etc. I carry a work cell phone and laptop, so that I am accessible away from the office.

    •Laid-back work environment:
◦we can stop and have casual conversations with co-workers during the day

    •Independence is encouraged:
◦most of us are given a job with “basic expectations”, and then it is up to us to make it what it is (we can tailor the job to our strengths)

    •Benefits are good:
◦the company pays a large portion of medical premiums for health insurance
◦Medical, Dental, Mental Health and Vision coverage
    ◦Short Term Disability, Life Insurance
◦ESOP retirement fund paid into by the company

    •Other:
◦The company pays for my cell phone
◦The company reimburses me for mileage during work-related tasks
◦The company is flexible in allowing me to buy the tools/supplies I need to do my job
◦The company is good about allowing me to participate in trainings as I see a need (1-day classes, online courses, webinars, etc)
◦The company offers access to general job/life “helps” online
◦The company has the capability to communicate with my counter-parts at other Columbia locations online
◦The company is forward-thinking in communication technologies. Work can be accessed through the Cloud from anywhere.

    Cons

Though working independently is a great aspect, sometimes this seems to cause management to be less involved.

Sometimes training opportunities are inconsistent. Some employees are offered a lot of training to improve their job knowledge. Some employees need training, but are either not offered it or denied the opportunities when they ask.

    Advice to Management

Be more involved with your employees. Use your resources to help them succeed and become even more valuable assets to the company.

I have been working at Columbia Forest Products full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The starting pay and benefits package is decent for production, okay for skilled tradesmen but they want everyone at production level so they don't have to pay more. They do offer paid time-off, though it is limited, but it is a perk. Initial training was thorough and very good, but little follow-up training.

    Cons

Leadership is lacking, supervisory is clique oriented and biased, the working atmosphere is hostile at best bordering abusive and complaints to human resources were redirected and ignored.

    Advice to Management

Company should value the skills and commitment of employees and review the leadership within each facility
