I have been working at Columbia Memorial Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very nice facility, clean and non cluttered.

    Cons

Many of the management team are the very definition of workplace bullies. Lying is a common theme, non violent bullying & use of various scare techniques. Cliques are the true leaders, as the CEO and Assistant Vice Presidents stay hidden and promote inner turmoil and conflict.

    Advice to Management

Reevaluate your hierarchy, actually consider merits of the person employed instead of how they look before promoting. Stop allowing directors to dress like street walkers.

I worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital full-time

    Pros

Busy environment. Pleasant building ambiance with lots of potential to be a good small town hospital.

    Cons

Middle management and supervisors are sorely underqualified and provide very little support or training for staff. Very cliqish about friends and family in the hiring process.

    Advice to Management

Train or hire qualified front line management to fill positions outside of the buddy system. If they can't do the job they are supposed to be supervising they shouldn't be there.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital part-time

    Pros

Staff was friendly and helpful to each other, had a family feel most of the time (depending on the department) in having each other's backs. The hospitalists they had while I was there were good to work with and willing to listen.

    Cons

Huge rift between administration and staff - lots of disagreements and miscommunication. Issues could be handled differently so as not to create more bad feelings, but instead it seems both management and staff deliberately do things to further the gap between them. Negotiation years are a nightmare. No willingness to compromise or see the other side - it's like the US government!

    Advice to Management

Find a way to handle issues - staffing, scheduling, pay, contract, etc - in a way that is less aggravating to staff. Don't be condescending, but also don't hide things. More transparency. Staff is already suspicious of anything management does.

    Pros

    Great facility with excellent equipment.

    Cons

Favoritism is shown for family and friends of individuals in charge of hiring. There is a lot of drama between staff. Certain departments are cliquish and unwelcoming to new comers.

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate who you have in leadership roles.

I worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, there are many good people who work there that try very hard to make a difference. The location is very convenient.

    Cons

Upper Management does not support middle management. Many of the upper management have a case of self importance. Often the decisions are overridden by directors and administration and discredits the middle management making them lose their credibility.

    Advice to Management

support the middle management. they know their employees better as they work directly with them everyday.

    Pros

Good pay - was once a wonderful place to work until current administration

    Cons

Terrible administrator who didn't care at all about staff and hired managers with the same attitude. Employees overall are unhappy and it shows.

    Advice to Management

Quit you are destroying a community gem

    Pros

They offer a competitive salary as compared to other healthcare opportunities in the area. There are also many employment settings to choose from.

    Cons

Health insurance is expensive, especially if you are paying for family medical insurance. There is no dental coverage beyond preventative care. Parking is also limited if you aren't utilizing the garage. Paid parking is expensive.

    Advice to Management

Contract negotiations continue between the hospital's management and bargaining employees. It would be nice if wages were increased to accommodate the cost of living increase. The cost of health insurance is also up for debate but, as many of us utilize hospital services, the cost should be kept at minimum to provide access for employees.

I worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It was a good place to work and my department was probably one of the best run departments at the hospital. There was great New Hire orientation and working there felt very much like a family. They also pay for school, which is great.

    Cons

The salary was somewhat low compared to that profession in other places, but commensurate with the area. More flexibility with schedule would've been nice. This hospital's reputation for excellence in care was not that good when I was there, but perhaps it's changed.

    Advice to Management

A wellness program needs to be a priority for staff. There should also be more outreach to recruit better doctors and elevate the level of care available to the community. Give NYC doctors incentives to live up there part-time at least.

    Pros

Great people, a nice facility, and it is very easy to excel in your role providing you work hard. But that is any position in healthcare.

    Cons

There are many people who are definitely underqualified for their positions, which can be frustrating for others who show the capability to excel in said roles.
