I worked at Columbia St. Mary's Hospitals (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A long tradition of helping people

    Cons

Since the acquisition by a large healthcare group, morale and service have suffered greatly. It's a profit machine, just like every other hospital. We're worker drones.

    Advice to Management

You are betraying what we stood for.

I worked at Columbia St. Mary's Hospitals part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved working for CSM until Ascension took over. There were, of course, always things to complain about like the difficult patient population we commonly see and the workload of a nurse. But overall, I loved all my coworkers, my manager had a great open-door policy and was very approachable, very flexible work schedule, etc.

    Cons

Since Ascension took over, our staffing has been cut, our staffing grid has been altered to give us a skeleton crew at best. The only time we're well staffed is if the floor is full. If we are at 75% capacity, we are struggling to do our best. Just because there are fewer patients DEFINITELY doesn't mean their acuity is less. Nurses, PCAs, even doctors, are leaving left and right. The last few weeks it has been basically expected that we will need to mandate at least one staff member per shift, we've lost so many people. On top of this, we are told we need to do BETTER. We need better HCAHP scores, answer call lights quicker, JC is coming, do better! But here is less staff....They are running this once great place into the ground.

    Advice to Management

Actually COME TO THE FLOOR and see what your staff is dealing with on a daily basis. The people making these decisions have no idea what it's like to be on the "front line".

    Pros

the only pro to this place is that nurses are expected to help out their subordinates, other than that, there aren't many benefits

    Cons

The so called "mentors" are bullies, regardless of how petty the mistake is on the orientees end. Furthermore, management does absolutely nothing about the bullying, if the orientee doesn't fix his/her petty mistake, he or she faces termination. Overall, nurses & pcas are extremely catty and mean to one another and will say one thing to their orientee, but something completely different to the manager

    Advice to Management

Stop glorifying and promoting employees that like to bully their fellow coworkers and subordinates. Bullies are unfit for the preceptor role.
