    Pros

Columbia State Community College is a nice place to work. Fellow instructors, both part time and full time are collegial and helpful.

    Cons

Adjunct work does not pay well at all. This is not the fault of Columbia State Community College. This is a state-mandated salary, I'm sure.

Welcome to the 1990s! (in the 2010s)

    Pros

    - Generous medical benefits, retirement benefits, and 3 weeks paid vacation. - It's a small organization, and you do get some freedom as a result. - Most faculty and non-admin staff employees are extremely friendly.

    Cons

The administrative staff is totally dysfunctional, and is overrun by office politics. The IT staff is stuck in the 1990s. Their control-freak style of managing technology is unreasonable and outdated. It's very stressful for employees, as they cannot even do their jobs without feeling as if they have multiple managers. (Ever see Office Space?) Mixing admin with tech is where it gets really fun! Admin are completely clueless as to what goes on in their own organization. Most admin staff doesn't even comprehend modern topics. The pay is also stuck in the 1990s. It's easily 33% below industry averages, even with the generous benefits package. Raises are tiny, if ever. If you live in Columbia, the cost of living is such that you can survive. But if you commute, or want to "save up" for anything, forget it. There's zero chance for advancement.

    Pros

Working for the State of TN has good benefits and is a secure position. Most of the people here really want to help the students so it's generally a positive environment.

    Cons

Administration has gone downhill since the current president was hired. She has been through half a dozen secretaries since taking office five years ago which was unheard of before as the local employment opportunities are limited.

Down to earth, but had me teaching classes I wasn't exactly qualified for.

May 15, 2013 - Adjunct Faculty in Columbia, TN

    Pros

Very down to earth. As adjunct faculty they gave me all of the materials I needed to teach. The pay was also good.

    Cons

They had me teaching classes I didn't think I was qualified to teach simply because my diploma was from the "school of Agriculture". I wasn't allowed to teach the biology classes I should have been able to.

    It Beats Customer Service

    Pros

The IT department works around my school schedule. It's a relaxed atmosphere most of the time, and it's a fairly easy job (even if you know nothing about technology.)

    Cons

Lots of micromanagement going on. Also, if someone does something wrong (be it on purpose or not, big or little) we ALL get in trouble for it.

    Pros

Samll classes, family atmosphere, plenty of technology

    Cons

Sometimes the technology is not all its cracked up to be but that is true anywhere. Adjunct don't get paid much but then it is not supposed to be livable just additional.
