I have been working at Columbus McKinnon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very strong vision for the company under Mark Morelli. 2 years of record breaking results, which the teams are very excited about. Company makes decisions quickly and is focusing on 80/20 simplification.

    Cons

Need to invest in better tools. Spend too much time on manual processes that don't add value.

    Pros

Caring people who want the business to succeed. Good pay. Can grow if you have initiative. Everyone works hard at this company so a strong work ethic is required.

    Cons

Benefits could be better. (vacation/sick time). Too much gossip and not enough facts happening so more communication between mgmt and employees.

    Advice to Management

Corporate Mgmt - Remember the people who make or assemble the products when creating new processes that don’t add value to the customer.

    Pros

    Nice office Supports local Charities

    Cons

Poor Management No recognition No opportunities to move up

    Advice to Management

Upper management is arrogant, patronizing, plays favorites and is disrespectful . Promotions are handed out to employees who are promiscuous and or display similar poor qualities. Hard work is not rewarded. Someone needs to set a clear tone to the leaders at CMCO this culture that has been going on for years needs to change. No one that works here can honestly say they love their job in this horrible environment

I worked at Columbus McKinnon for more than 4 years

    Pros

None come to mind at the moment

    Cons

Horrible management. All are micro managers with no creative thinking. Women don't get recognized like the men do. Women are 2nd class citizens to management. There is no upward mobility for women unless you're a complete bully willing to cut the throats of others. That's when management invents managerial positions even when the person is not qualified to manage people. Managers manage by reports-they have no idea...

    Advice to Management

Treat people, men and women equally. Promote on qualifications, if you're managing, at least learn the business and get in the trenches with your people. Remember respect is earned, we aren't just going to give it to you if you don't deserve and work for it . Your title doesn't automatically mean you're respected, believe it or not.

    Pros

A lot of people are great to work with. Many opportunities to give back to the community. With new CEO there is a clear direction for the company.

    Cons

No opportunities for advancement unless some quits or is fired. There is also no development process to help employees get more experience and grow in their careers. Politics are rampant at the executive and middle management levels. If you don't feed into the game, you can't become a favorite and advance, even if you're more skilled than others. Employees who demonstrate what others think are negative qualities are...

    Advice to Management

Start treating employees better by valuing their skills and helping them move up in the company based on performance, not favoritism. Find the bad seeds and remove them to improve the work environment for others.

    Pros

-There are some nice people who work there, getting fewer and fewer these days. -Benefits are standard compared to other companies.

    Cons

-Little to no advancement opportunities. -Low pay scale. -Directors show too much favoritism.

    Advice to Management

-Care more about your employees, otherwise you will keep having a high turnover rate. -Be intelligent enough to know your good employees from your bad ones.

I have been working at Columbus McKinnon full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

The CEO has a clear vision and rolled out new vision and values that are exciting and going in the right direction. Some of the newer leaders are bringing an energy that is refreshing and inspiring. Like anywhere, this company is not perfect but for the first time in a long time we believe we might actually be on the right track. The company is doing well financially and hope that means we all share in the success somehow.

    Cons

Need more diversity...there are practically no women or minorities in leadership roles. Seems they are trying to make progress on diversity with some of the newer hires in management but still a long way to go. Some of the people in charge have been here a long time and do not really live the values just rolled out.

    Advice to Management

I want management to know there are a LOT of people excited to see the improvements and want you to keep going. Keep investing in people at all levels. There are great, loyal people here who want to help the company do well, just show us the company cares about us in return. Communicate more often from the top...we want to know what is going on. Make sure the people in management actually live the values if you want to...
