I have been working at Column Technologies, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Talented engineers, very nice project staff, high tech and up to speed with technology. Nice family culture. Good work life balance depending on work load.

    Cons

Disjointed management, very stressful politics, the project management lead has very little credible experience and learned mostly on the job. Very high school and emotionally driven. Work environment is more like the blame game.

    Advice to Management

Provide more support to your staff. Scout experienced managers that can make decisions based off strategy and not emotions.

I have been working at Column Technologies, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great salary, pays market rates comparable to full time employment with non-consulting company.

    Cons

Lots of travel (3-4 weeks/month) even when told during interviews that travel would be minimal (<25%, one week/month)

    Advice to Management

Don't sell position as "mostly remote" and then require consultants to travel 3-4 weeks out of the month.

I have been working at Column Technologies, Inc. full-time

    Pros

Because the company is considered a small business, you get the opportunity to develop relationships with just about everybody company-wide, so you get that "family feel" environment.

    Cons

There is no training program for any role in the company. No roadmap to success. You're given a computer, and then given the opportunity to either figure out how to do your job, or not.

There is no true "chain of command". People quit all the time to go work for the competition, but the owners are too cheap to hire external help. The owners would rather impose more work on their tenured employees resulting in 60-70 hour work weeks.

Working at Column is a lot of high school; everybody including upper management gossips, and is encouraged to.

There is zero opportunity for advancement.

Although there is an HR department, there are walking HR violations on the daily basis. What goes on here and is considered "normal" would be multiple no tolerance HR violations at any other company.

    Advice to Management

-Promoting people without any prior management experience, let alone people skills, doesn't help out a team. Instead, it causes problems for employees due to a constant lack of qualified leadership.

-Hire people that reflect professionalism. It isn't acceptable that people in managerial roles that are married, openly act like they're not at company and client functions.

-Take some initiative and get to know your employees, instead of gossiping around and asking them what they think of their peers. Rather, it creates a hostile work environment that doesn't make anybody comfortable, and encourages conflicts amongst your employees.

-Stop giving one person multiple roles and responsibilities. Why do you think everybody quits and goes to the competition?

    Pros

you learn a lot technically because you troubleshoot many issues across multiple combinations of environments and versions

access to VM environments and multiple server software versions/types

    Cons

You are on your own at this company. If you are a good self-learning, self-motivated person and do not require much attention or employee accolades, then it is a good place to learn a lot technically for the short term

There are a lot of good technical resources however, you will not work in a team. You are on your own to learn and you can get information from people if you push, but there is really no team environments. Everyone is so busy and buried, that each person is just trying to keep up with their own queues.

Company is very sales oriented and that is where the attention and rewards are focused. Once the support is sold, the quality of how that support is delivered is is an afterthought and usually responding to the loudest complaining customer

small, cramped cubes and very noisy

some people work from home full time but if you live anywhere near corporate you cannot work from home at all - no logic or reasoning behind that decision

upper management is small, tight group of old friends and family who have no business being in management and would not survive at a public corporation

    no employee survey/feedback is sought after. If you give any; it is ignored. Company has no interest in evolving or allowing new approaches/ideas;

negative and vengeful attitude toward employees

many unethical salary "games"; example: offer sign bonus based on some unattainable/un-established certification, push reviews out for multiple months and delay any raises - so in 4 years you may have 2 review/raise, no logic/process to amount of raise and will avoid raising pay anyway they can, low raises if any is given, regardless of performance, company profit or contribution to companies success

no effort or thought is put towards employee satisfaction or corporate culture. It is a one way relationship and you are on your own

    Advice to Management

Get an external, objective, professional service to come into company and audit/review how things are done and survey employees anonymously. Then step back from the personal “small company” attitude and allow the company to evolve, allow employees to have ownership of their area of expertise, and trust that the people doing the work know what they are doing and will make the company better

I worked at Column Technologies, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

On the technical side, Column works closely with product manufacturers to make sure that personnel get the training they need. Note - I said product manufacturers. Don't expect to get much in the way of internal training.

    Cons

Management is inconsistent at best and manic at worst. Senior management makes decisions based on their emotions and lacks any sort of long term strategy. Loyalty is non-existent, and you are judged more on your appearance and your ability to cater to the whims of the owners than your actual abilities. Senior management would rather put blinders on than face the issues in the company.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of your mid level managers and hire people who know what it's like to run a company of this size. The owners should get out of day-to-day decisions and either learn how to develop company wide strategies or hire someone who can.

I worked at Column Technologies, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1) Good opportunities to learn, if you're technically strong then it's an opportunities galore
    2) Great Pay - salaries are better than industry standards, additional monetary benefits for employees who are travelling or at customer location

    Cons

    1) Absolute lack of management, management is just namesake, in 9/10 cases you'll feel on your own
    2) Travel is unplanned and poorly executed, lack of a professional travel team
    3) Consultants and Developers are made to do everything from their own work to others work to Project Management to Training etc
    4) Lack of Technical expertise or know how amognst the technical managers
    5) Company forces signing of a 2/3 year bond, these terms are only mentioned on the day of joining and not earlier - unfair hiring practice, breaking the bond would mean the company would not give a experience certificate
    6) Absolute lack of HR policies and methods, expect policies to change overnight and to be whimsical favouring the management, I've personally seen an instance where a policy was changed overnight
    7) Process - What Process?

    Advice to Management

    1) Start recognising talent within your teams, just experience should not be the cause for being a technical manager
    2) Eliminate the bond period or declare the same whilst recruiting
    3) Stick to Processes - for both employees as well as customers
    4) Support your employees and they'll support you, ensure roles and responsibilities are defined clearly, don't expect one person to do everything - treat them fairly
    5) Deal with complaints under the garb or anonymity rather than exposing the complainant, ensure that complaints are acted upon fairly and not turned a blind eye to
