I worked at Commerce Bank full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I got to work with some really great people in other departments. The location of the office was nice and centrally located. Work life balance is good and easy going. Also, banker holidays are a nice perk.

    Cons

There is not a lot of career advancement opportunities so don't expect anything fast. There are a lot of people who have been there for 10, 20+ years and are just trying to coast to retirement so that does not help. Also the management leaves a lot to be desired and the corporate culture is somewhat toxic with a lot of favoritism and a lot of shunning of new ideas. The company just keeps adding more layers of management that makes it more difficult to get things done. Management in my department was really disorganized and generally not approachable.

    Advice to Management

Rethink the terrible corporate culture and get some new employees in there.

I worked at Commerce Bank full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a great entry level job to start with to gain some experience to qualify for better positions

    Cons

Way too sales oriented. I felt really uncomfortable shoving credit cards down people's throats who certainly didn't need them.

    Advice to Management

Lower the sales goals. Credit cards are a great tool to use, but not everyone needs one.

    Cons

Difficult to get promoted within the organization. Company tends to hire outside employees for positions rather than promote from within.

I have been working at Commerce Bank full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most employees are friendly, although there is a lot of burn out.
Relationships built with customers is nice when you get to know the regulars.

    Cons

Sales are pushed to customers and heavily weighed on your production numbers. Customers get frustrated with being interrogated every time they come in. Expectations are high and pay is low. Sales goals are unreachable. Employment is always on the line based on how much you sell. There too much turnover in staff and it's always understaffed. Upper management doesn't seem to understand.

    Advice to Management

Realize that you can't sell to every customer that walks in the door. Value your employees.

I worked at Commerce Bank full-time

    Pros

Once you are in the door, you will have a job for as long as you want. Great launching pad for careers elsewhere.

    Cons

The company will not get rid of people who don't perform, who bring other people down, lacks creativity, fair pay among respective grade levels and innovation.

    Advice to Management

Erase the space between top level management and ground level. Get rid of the brown-nosed middle managers and replace with people who will cultivate and control a positive work environment.
