I worked at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    HR staff enjoy good salaries.

    Cons

I have seen compelling evidence that this organisation is corrupt. Promise a lot; deliver little.

I worked at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great colleagues — smart and driven scientists, world-leading in many fields. Lots of opportunity to do varied work in multidisciplinary teams Strong learning and development opportunities Flexible working arrangements Great place to develop connections between science, industry and government, or to incubate innovative new tech businesses.

    Cons

Limited and declining freedom to set a research direction unless your work is commercial Once beyond postdoc level, need to bring in more than your own salary in external funding Salaries have fallen behind universities Shifting goal posts for promotion (some years, it’s publish or perish, other years, publication is almost penalised — seems to be cyclical) Frequent restructures. Long term staff traumatised by large-scale redundancies and dramatic change in organisational vision/mission. Heavy bureaucracy.

    Pros

High quality researchers at the grass roots continuing to lead the world in applied (useful) science

    Cons

5 successive years of ideologically based job cuts have left morale in tatters, and resulted in the loss of core expert scientists. Relatively unskilled middle management has grown. Emphasis on short term contracts at the expense of quality. Pay freeze for 3 years.. no sign of change,
