I have been working at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The work is great. Interesting and varied. Great people to work alongside. Highly educated, professional work force. Flexible work arrangements. Diversity is actively encouraged. Great IT infrastructure.

    Cons

Very hierarchical culture. Tendency for management to avoid responsibility and to shift blame onto staff. Subject to Australian Public Service rules, including arbitrary caps on employee numbers and restrictions on Enterprise Agreement negotiations. More focused on adhering to government policy than meeting customer expectations. Engineering and technical expertise not valued.

"Flexible work but lacking performance culture"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Engineer

I worked at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In general excellent work life balance with very flexible working hours (with the exception of a couple of projects that were definitely not so) Excellent career development opportunities for post docs

    Cons

Difficult to progress or transition to technical role unless PhD qualified. Extremely bureaucratic in role promotion that makes advancement difficult for high achievers at the start of their careers (not applicable for PhD qualified employees as they typically start at a high enough salary band not to be effected, issue particularly relevant entering at CSOF 3 & potentially below) Promotions more to do with... longevity than capability. Can be inflexible in meeting demands of industrial clients within short time frames, seemingly due to bureaucratic systems that prevent mobilisation of the workforce. HR & senior management appear unable to traverse these issues. Seemingly a lot of dead wood. Very frustrating achieving double the output of colleagues who are at higher pay brackets. Recent redundancies have resulted largely in people who wanted to leave leaving while the dead wood remains.

    Advice to Management

Need to develop a performance based culture. Renumeration should be based on capability.

I have been working at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

-Smart people, who in general, are trying to use their science to have a positive impact on Australian society. -Flexible working hours. -Its unique cross-disciplinary nature enables some exciting and ambitious projects to be undertaken.

    Cons

-Salaries are no longer competitive with industry or academia -Too many small projects that are not funded adequately to compete; either against industry or in the academic space. -Strong tension between doing science and developing products, which sometimes works out ok, but sometimes does not work out.
