    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time

    Pros

They offer great work flexibility in terms of hours, part time work, job sharing, types of leave etc, and work/life balance and self improvement through internal courses. This is all dependent on your seniors, however. If you have a supportive manager then you will find it a great place to work in terms of work/life balance and promotion.

    Cons

Too much change in terms of structure, reporting line, management and project/portfolios and flagships. This uncertainty impacts on morale and makes it hard to achieve or focus on ever-changing goals and priorities.

    Advice to Management

    Be transparent and open.

"Flexible work but lacking performance culture"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Engineer

I worked at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In general excellent work life balance with very flexible working hours (with the exception of a couple of projects that were definitely not so) Excellent career development opportunities for post docs

    Cons

Difficult to progress or transition to technical role unless PhD qualified. Extremely bureaucratic in role promotion that makes advancement difficult for high achievers at the start of their careers (not applicable for PhD qualified employees as they typically start at a high enough salary band not to be effected, issue particularly relevant entering at CSOF 3 & potentially below) Promotions more to do with... longevity than capability. Can be inflexible in meeting demands of industrial clients within short time frames, seemingly due to bureaucratic systems that prevent mobilisation of the workforce. HR & senior management appear unable to traverse these issues. Seemingly a lot of dead wood. Very frustrating achieving double the output of colleagues who are at higher pay brackets. Recent redundancies have resulted largely in people who wanted to leave leaving while the dead wood remains.

    Advice to Management

Need to develop a performance based culture. Renumeration should be based on capability.

    Pros

They recruit great people. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Cuts in funding means you see lots of staff leaving. Your experience depends on your business unit leader. Some like to micromanage causing loss of agility and poor customer service

    Advice to Management

Trust your staff, less micro management, need improvement in communication

I have been working at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Excellent work-life balance. Flexible work hours & able to take unpaid leave. Get to work with things that don't need to be sold or make money. Cutting edge projects. Minimal customer disruption. Collaborative atmosphere. Freedom of information.

    Cons

Run by the government. Government hates us. Continual cost cutting. Retrenchments every Christmas. I feel like a contractor even though I'm a permanent employee. Run down offices. Heartless management practices.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more independent from federal government.
