I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Working on the beach was a pleasure, and the lifeguards have their own shack which is attached to a branch of the Charles River Canoe and Kayak rental company. An Environmental Protection Officer helped with any problems that arose with intoxicated or otherwise out of line patrons who the lifeguards or park workers could not handle without disregarding their primary responsibilities. The workers are all great, and radios...

    Cons

The fourth of July is absolutely insane, people sneak into the park and you can barely see the sand underneath all the patrons. Cleaning up the park with pic sticks is also a part of the job, as well as occasionally cleaning the bathrooms.

    Advice to Management

Extend beach hours longer into the season and have a seasonal cookout for all the employees.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

super easy, you are literally on break more than you are working. It's very team oriented and you get really close with your crew of lifeguards

    Cons

The management of DCR is abysmal. None of them know how to properly communicate and all are not fit for their job. The worst part is they know this so they come DOWN of you hard for everything

    Advice to Management

They just need to learn how to communicate. They leave everybody in the dark and when they visit the pool they come in like a wrecking ball.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts part-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Great seasonal job in the summer. Usually from the end of June to the end of August. Decent pay for the work you do. You get paid on break as a lifeguard. Fun and relaxing, most coworkers are very nice and sociable

    Cons

Not much career growth. As a lifeguard, you either stay as a lifeguard, or move up to a head lifeguard. You can be an assistant manager of the facility or manager. Some days can be really treacherous, especially on super hot and humid days when staff are low. Most of the out door pool buildings are very old Outdoor pools aren't that clean compared to indoor pools

    Advice to Management

    Renovate some of the buildings?
