I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Working for the Commonwealth, you have the opportunity to be part of a greater mission and contribute to helping others in a way that is not always available in other industries. There are many dedicated people who believe in the mission of their respective agency and are passionate about the organizations mission. Being a part of that and knowing that you contribute towards making the quality of life better for the...

    Cons

The pay structure is set up with policies that are actually counter productive and discouraging to hard workers and long time employees, especially those that choose to take a management role. There are very few if any merit increases, typically there is a slight cost of living increase each year. There are policies which put artificial caps on the increase percentages for internal applicants which allow for the recruitment...

    Advice to Management

Change the policies to reward high performance and create true promotional pay increases. Bring back true merit increases that encourage employees to go above and beyond.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Ability to work independently, able to take time off when needed.

    Cons

Toxic, clicky work environment, staff more focussed on themselves than caring for the individuals served. Management allowing dysfunction and bullying vy lower level management to continue in work place.

    Advice to Management

Get involved and stop allowing the place to be managed a junior high; hold lower managers accountable to be good at their jobs; they should be building their staff and providers up rather than trying to destroy them.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Retirement and health benefits are excellent, hours were set, vacation can be earned as comp, hours for working OT, very helpful if you are a salary employee, room to advance from within

    Cons

Long and short term insurance was not offered, coming from a corporate environment and trying to "manage" union employees is a difficult task, hence giving you a lot of stress

    Advice to Management

Back your managers up, teach proper managing Union employees, if your trained you will drive yourself insane

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Providing service to fellow state residents and knowing you're working on something valuable that is tangible and not just the next widget that is designed to make someone a profit.

    Cons

Uncertainty at times of administration change, the posturing for power between organizations within the state and the rather rigid rules around everything from interviews through procurement that seem downright draconian.

    Advice to Management

Need to adjust to being in the 21st century and bring everything up to date, the technology, salaries, things like procurement rules all need to be addressed.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts

    Pros

-Talent is rewarded quickly with responsibility. - Issues are relevant to society- feel as though you are making an impact. - 9-5 lifestyle - Pay can be competitive - Interesting work

    Cons

    - Not enough young talent and therefore an older working environments - Politics can get in the way of progress - Limited salary growth

    Advice to Management

I have seen both extremely competent former business executives in leadership roles as well as political appointees who have reversed progress and turned their back on doing the RIGHT action in favor of doing the politically sensitive action. Remember that we serve the people of Massachusetts and we have a responsibility to act accordingly. Only put qualified people in positions of leadership.

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

There is the potential to assist clients and to do real good. Often there is exposure to cases that enable the use of a broad skill set.

    Cons

The overlayering of supervisors and managers on the basis of political connections hampers advocacy for clients that do not meet a preconceived agenda.

    Advice to Management

Recognize a broader set of objectives. Empower case workers to apply assistance beyond a narrow performance matrix.
