    Cons

Managers with no supervisor experience who were untrained and had negative attitudes

    Advice to Management

Managers need to develop training programs, see employees potential and set a positive outlook which then resonates to all employees at all levels.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Work life Balance, Hours are consistent and no required overtime. Good Holiday schedule and generous sick time accrual. Stable work environment.

    Cons

-New employs contribute high percentage of pay towards Pension 9% for first 30k in salary and 11 percent for anything over 30k. - Benefits are not great - Training and growth opportunities are very limited - perks are non existent compared to the private sector. Don't expect free coffee, but you do get free water at least -Same pay regardless of performance. Good employees will make the same amount as bad employees,...

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Good pension package if you are in it for the long haul. Holiday, vacation, and sick time are generous. I have a lot of freedom in how the program runs. Lots of diversity in potential growth.

    Cons

Merit pay in not available. Reviews are not tied to pay increases. Time in service is time is tied to pay, so why let yourself get burned out. Pay is low compared to private sector. Promotions come with minimal pay increases, making it difficult to keep young and innovative people.

    Advice to Management

Good workers tend to get the majority of the work load while not so motivated people get the same treatment. Uniformity in work delegations.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

You're not working long hours, people are generally helpful and friendly. You gain a good understanding of the decision making processes of state government. You also have an opportunity to learn about all aspects of food policy, production agriculture, and ag promotion.

    Cons

It's state government. No one thinks outside of the box. Middle management is relatively inefficient, and new administrations bring new leadership and shifting priorities. Nothing happens quickly.

    Advice to Management

Establish priorities and stay focused on them.
