I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The paycheck doesn't bounce. Medical and Dental benefits are higher than expected. M-F, 9-5 work day is deceptively attractive.

    Cons

Pay is deplorable. And in lieu of the pay difference from private companies, there is the suggestion that a "pension" is enough. It's not. No work from home option (manager level). No 401K and no ability to put something away outside of the dangling carrot the Commonwealth calls a pension (minimum 10 year required stay). Minimal corporate benefits (corporate discounts). Lack of direction from Executive levels. No career path for younger employees; general acknowledgement - if they leave, they leave. Non-transparent work environment; executive leadership is always looking over its shoulder rather than getting out in front of issues. A soul-sucking environment.

    Advice to Management

    Ground up restructure.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The jobs in the various departments, once trained and competent, afford a degree of autonomy. The projects assigned will be accompanied, in most cases, with a date for completion. Help and resources are generally provided as needed.

    Cons

There are multiple layers of burocracy. Often people will actively work at cross purposes because they feel they were not properly appeased.

    Advice to Management

You know who the competent core people are and who make completion difficult. Cabin the difficult, so the process is more efficient and effective without having to pay homage to every little carved out fiefdom

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work life Balance, Hours are consistent and no required overtime. Good Holiday schedule and generous sick time accrual. Stable work environment.

    Cons

-New employs contribute high percentage of pay towards Pension 9% for first 30k in salary and 11 percent for anything over 30k.
    - Benefits are not great
    - Training and growth opportunities are very limited
    - perks are non existent compared to the private sector. Don't expect free coffee, but you do get free water at least
-Same pay regardless of performance. Good employees will make the same amount as bad employees, the system does not reward hard work.

    Advice to Management

Offer more training opportunities, increase the potential to move between departments or agencies to give good employees room for growth

    Cons

The pay and other perks are lacking for the amount of work that is expected to be produced by an individual.

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pension if you can stand working there long enough to get one. Flexible hours. Benefits. MassHelath members extremely appreciative of help.

    Cons

Approximately 6 senior level managers make all of the decisions. There is no trust or empowerment given to subordinates. Out-of-the box thinking is discouraged. Lots of employees who have been there far too long (waiting for pensions!) and are committed to "that is the way we do things." No support for creative thinking to save taxpayer funds. Computer systems are a disaster with multiple "work-arounds" done in the back room. Human Resources completely absent with many individuals not having written job descriptions or annual reviews. Lay-offs imminent with last hired, first fired philosophy. Career path difficult to envision. Some units are like high school with favored cliques getting the majority of overtime opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Ask your staff about potential unintended consequences before you make decisions that impact MassHealth members. Senior level management is far too removed from membership to fully understand the implications or their decisions. Instead senior management runs around putting out fires all the time. Review your employee performance and ask THEM (not consultants you bring in to ask them) how operations could be run better. Consider MassHealth members customers, not irritants. You will never retain young innovative employees if you do not change your ways. This could be a positive work environment if you simply valued your employees; instead it feels like a sweat shop where innovation is discouraged or penalized.

    Pros

Good benefits, good salary, job security.

    Cons

Difficult to advance as people are often placed due to seniority and not merit. Environments can be less than professional at times. Job mentoring does not seem to occur.

    Advice to Management

Grow your people and learn to reward them for a job well done rather than just highlighting every time they make a mistake.

    Pros

Allows you to work independantly. Provides competetive pay with opportunities for overtime. Provides a great pension plan. Provides many opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

At times the workload can be heavy with no assistance provided. Sometimes need to work past your regular work hours in order to get a specific job done. You must sometimes travel a lot.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice. Management does what it can to lessen the workload but sometimes you must complete jobs by yourself.
