I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Foot in the door in political arena, insight, holidays/time off, exposure, benefits

      Cons

Long hours for low pay, uncertain job security if working for elected official, easily burnt out

      Advice to Management

Experience may vary dependent on who you work for. There is a lack of urgency which, to me, stymies drive and ambition. If you are willing to be a cog, then its fine, but if you have further aspirations outside of running for office, the lack of advancement may be an issue.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Good work-life balance, lots of smart people to work with, very deep involvement in law-making process

      Cons

Very low pay, ability to move up or around depends on connections or your boss' ambitions or standing with leadership.

    • "Stereotypes hold true. Good if you're reaching end of career. Not a good start for a new and/or young career."

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts

      Pros

Stable, regular work (you're in for your 8 hours a day, no more no less). Unionized means very good job security. Decent benefits and pension, depending on your opinion whether pensions are relevant anymore.

      Cons

Stereotypes of government work are in full force - high job security means people can slack off and raise grievances over every little thing, inflexible and archaic procedures, low pay compared to the private sector. Office culture is trapped in the late 1980s-early 1990s.

      Advice to Management

Understandable as to why hands are tied over some things due to laws and unions and whatnot. Loosening of "the old ways" can help attract the younger crowd who can bring some good ideas to the table.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts for more than 9 years

      Pros

Because it's a small office, you can have a wide variety of jobs, and have a huge impact on state departments. Least likely agency to experience layoffs.

      Cons

Low pay. No mobility unless you want to be in management. About 1/4 of the staff are managers. Vicious workplace. Highest levels of management show an obvious distaste for working with regular employees.

      Advice to Management

Get rid of some of the managers. They don't do anything. Lighten up.
