I have been working at Commonwealth of Virginia full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The state benefits are nice, although the retirement plan is very confusing. There is a good amount of paid holidays throughout the year.

    Cons

Communication from management is often poor and demoralizing. The Division of Child Support Enforcement tries to make itself sound as if it's flexible, but it's really not. Alternate work schedules are a joke because of coverage, and there are also empty promises of telecommuting, that we've received hints are never going to come true.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to communicate with your staff and use constructive criticism. Practice honesty, an open door policy, and learn leadership skills. That last point is very important. Good leadership builds trust and loyalty, which is highly lacking in this job.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Virginia full-time

    Pros

Good Health insurance, 12 paid holidays, respectful environment.

    Cons

Cheap - cut budget by cutting basics to employees - i.e: no water is provided (employees must bring their own drinkable water), no napkins (napkins only for the public - employees must not use napkins or bring their own napkins from home), no overtime (workload keeps increasing, but you don't have extra time to do them), and 30 minutes lunch only. Also, unfair division of tasks - whoever works gets double work, whoever does not work (yes, they got those too) gets less and less work (and no warning).

    Advice to Management

Hire more people, increase salary, and stop being cheap towards employees.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Virginia full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

State benefits, good hours, you receive a free lunch everyday, even though it's a prison the patients are not that bad

    Cons

Always short staffed, staff does not work on the same page, high turn over rate amongst all staff, the free lunch will make you sick everyday

    Advice to Management

    Pros

In my position I have a great amount of independence and variety in my daily routine. Designing and implementing networks is also challenging, as are other technical projects.

    Cons

Lack of organization is extremely frustrating and the work load is unbelievabley high. Long days are quite common and there is no compensation for overtime even though we are considered salary.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people. Trying to cover the entire state with a team of five is rediculous, especially considering the nature of the environment we work in. Also I would suggest a clear and easily available set of "Standard Operating Procedures" for all new employees. The fact that I have still never gotten my new employee training/orientation is a joke, especially considering the hazards of working inside prisons among general population.

    Pros

Teleworking opportunities are great...lots of room to be creative as long you are productive.

    Cons

Low salaries...Salaries are not competitive with private sector.

    Advice to Management

Reward the hard workers who demonstrate commitment and investment in what they do.

    - Budget Issue
