    Pros

Working for the state was a valuable career-expanding experience. The continued opportunities for classroom and on-the-job training were excellent, and I had the freedom to expand my knowledge in a variety of functional areas. The various agencies are very collaborative, so I was able to build a strong professional network that still lasts to this day. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides great avenues of support for its employees to become involved with professional associations and obtain certifications, so I was constantly learning new and relevant information.

    Cons

Sometimes the flow of customers was so heavy that it made it difficult to catch up on administrative tasks, but I was fortunate to have very supportive coworkers and supervisors.

I worked at Commonwealth of Virginia full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts is a great way for an aspiring auditor to launch their career even before they've completed their accounting courses. You will be given immediate experience as a member of an audit team with responsibilities that will grow as fast as you can handle them. The team members you work with are constantly moving on to major accounting firms giving you contacts almost everywhere you need them. Don't hesitate to accept this opportunity if internal audit is where you want to go.

    Cons

Try to avoid being placed on solo audits that are over your head early in your career here. Every opportunity to work with experienced team members will pay off. Save the solo work until you've gotten a few audits under your belt.

    Advice to Management

See above. Careful not to stunt a young auditors growth by placing them into the deep end before they can swim.

    Pros

There was fair treatment to all employees in reference to possible issues, time off, work hours, opportunities and management support.

    Cons

The only downside working for the state of Virginia was the amount of work that increased due to staff downsizing.

    Advice to Management

I loved the opportunity to work with management and coworkers. Time spent there was a pleasant, easy going, knowledgable experience.

    Pros

Employees and management have a strong sense of public service and want to do the right thing. This is a great place to work if you want to make a real difference.

    Cons

While there are methods to discipline under performing employees, there are too few methods to promote and recognize strong employees.

    Advice to Management

Learn the state human resources rules and learn how to deal with difficult employees. Too many managers are afraid of long-term, entrenched employees and don't know how to deal with them properly.
