Working for the Commonwealth of Virginia
Apr 30, 2019 - Financial Service Manager I in Richmond, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
My peers are very nice and personable. Non-financial benefits are good. Excellent work-life balance.
Cons
The pay is extremely low for the level of knowledge and skills. Upper management can be distant and aloof--not personable. Many leaders lack management/leadership skills even though they have technical knowledgeable. Promotions are often based on who you know. Work can lack challenge.

Good Benefits for Full Time Employees
Cons
Salary increases limited for full time employees
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
Good health benefits. Good coworkers. Once you are in it is a little bit easier to move around to other agencies.
Cons
There were times when there was just too much red tape to go through in order to fix a simple problem (ex: update information on the website for constituency).

Pros
Good benefits across all agencies. SOME departments were well run and morale was great. Some agencies are better to work for than others. SOME have a fairly 'family' of co-workers atmosphere where everyone digs in together.
Cons
HR is centrally run from Richmond, and HR is set up punitively; 15 floors of people stamping a piece pf paper in triplicate and sending to the next desk. HR is archaic, and by design. The complication keeps the legislature from realizing they could save millions by going to an off-the shelf product by ADP, and fire most the over paid cronies staffing the Monroe building. Don't think HR will listen to or act upon employee concerns. The big line is "this is a right-to-work state and if you don't like it, there is the door." Many department heads are degree heavy autocrats with no real world experience or idea on how to manage their duties. Poorly paid office service specialists - mostly part time with no benefits - and contract staff, do the ACTUAL "heavy lifting" in a job. there is little real teamwork. You can be brilliant, but a 900 year old half-retired coworker will get the promotion because of tenure and knowing all the HR staff.

Offers stable employment and good benefits.
Cons
No reward for effort. Much talk about "pushing decision-making down," but in reality, that never happens.

Pros
Good healthcare benefits and pension
Cons
Low Pay with no raises
