Excellent foot in the door for aspiring auditors

Feb 19, 2015 - Auditor in Richmond, VA

    Pros

The Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts is a great way for an aspiring auditor to launch their career even before they've completed their accounting courses. You will be given immediate experience as a member of an audit team with responsibilities that will grow as fast as you can handle them. The team members you work with are constantly moving on to major accounting firms giving you contacts almost everywhere you need them. Don't hesitate to accept this opportunity if internal audit is where you want to go.

    Cons

Try to avoid being placed on solo audits that are over your head early in your career here. Every opportunity to work with experienced team members will pay off. Save the solo work until you've gotten a few audits under your belt.

    Pros

The staff can make this an enjoyable working experience. Training is among the best.

    Cons

The pay isn't the best or anywhere near the best. Some of the older employees need to retire along with their way of thinking. It is a true dichotomy there.

Some benefits but a lot of bureaucracy and hypocrisy

    Apr 7, 2014 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Telework opportunities are the best part for me. Without that, I'd probably really be struggling to stay positive.

    Cons

Many buildings/floors are terrible. Cubicle walls and furniture are falling apart and from the '60's and '70's. Everything is really slow - lots of bureaucracy and lack of action. Lots of 'studies' done that don't seem to go anywhere. For many agencies. there is no $ for training, development, mileage reimbursement, equipment,..... No pay increases over the past ~7 years (except for 1 year). Disappointing considering many of the appointed political positions get multiple pay increases over their 4 year terms.

Working for the Commonwealth of Virginia

Apr 30, 2019 - Financial Service Manager I in Richmond, VA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

My peers are very nice and personable. Non-financial benefits are good. Excellent work-life balance.

    Cons

The pay is extremely low for the level of knowledge and skills. Upper management can be distant and aloof--not personable. Many leaders lack management/leadership skills even though they have technical knowledgeable. Promotions are often based on who you know. Work can lack challenge.

    Not playing by the rules

May 13, 2020 - Consultant in Richmond, VA
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    Good pay for contract work

    Cons

They do not take their fiduciary responsibility seriously and waste our tax money. People who have worked there for years get away with anyone everything. No consequences. They have all sorts of rules for contractors therefore most of their contractors really should be W-2 employees but they do not adhere to the IRS rules and are able to get away with it.

    Excellent

    Pros

The benefits are outstanding, like most state jobs.

    Cons

The pay is low and there isn’t really a way to get an increase unless you move into management.

    Over worked and under paid

    Jan 12, 2015 - Sergeant in Virginia

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Its great being a public servant and doing a job that many people would not be able to do. Good training opportunities.

    Cons

Very political from the bottom to the top. Many cut backs due to state budget being cut. All prisons in the state are working short handed which makes for a dangerous work environment. Working short handed also causes moral to drop due to staff having to constantly work over time that they do not get paid for as they are force to adjust all over time off. There is talk of closing more prisons in Virginia this year. The departments pay band has been messed up for years. I am a supervisor and have worked for the department for going on 15 years. I know Officer with less then half my time in that make more than I do. We have only had one or two pay raises in the past 7 or 8 years. Every time we received a pay raise our insurance would go up so much that we would bring home less on our checks than before we go the raise. To shorten this up. NO cost of living raises, NO longevity pay, Short staffed, NO paid overtime, Staff have less right that the offenders they watch.
