Program Support Tech

Great Benefits, multiple locations to choose from if you are mobile. Good continuing education packages and perks for cultural events in the state
Cons
Depending on the agency, poor compensation. Raises are based on petitions from the general assembly. Unless in upper management a single person can't afford living alone without a part-time job. Not enough to live, but too much for assistance.

Pros
Gain valuable experience; impact your government
Cons
No room for advancement; raises directly related to state budget

Pros
Its great being a public servant and doing a job that many people would not be able to do. Good training opportunities.
Cons
Very political from the bottom to the top. Many cut backs due to state budget being cut. All prisons in the state are working short handed which makes for a dangerous work environment. Working short handed also causes moral to drop due to staff having to constantly work over time that they do not get paid for as they are force to adjust all over time off. There is talk of closing more prisons in Virginia this year. The departments pay band has been messed up for years. I am a supervisor and have worked for the department for going on 15 years. I know Officer with less then half my time in that make more than I do. We have only had one or two pay raises in the past 7 or 8 years. Every time we received a pay raise our insurance would go up so much that we would bring home less on our checks than before we go the raise. To shorten this up. NO cost of living raises, NO longevity pay, Short staffed, NO paid overtime, Staff have less right that the offenders they watch.

Pros
The benefits are great ie medical, vacation and sick leave
Cons
Pay is based on your personal relationship with your manager. Many think the general assembly dictates the amount of pay increases but managers have a form they can complete to give private raises to certain employees. These raises are known as PAR parties.

Steady and stable, lower salaries
Nov 17, 2021 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Steady and stable positions. As long as you can show up, so do the paychecks. The benefits aren't bad, with plenty of time off and a pension.
Cons
Salaries can't compete with the private sector. Raises barely keep up with inflation. Employees are constantly looking around to see if the grass is greener outside the state. Some work changes based on political leadership changes.

Pros
Good healthcare benefits and pension
Cons
Low Pay with no raises
