Working for the Commonwealth of Virginia

Apr 30, 2019 - Financial Service Manager I in Richmond, VA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

My peers are very nice and personable. Non-financial benefits are good. Excellent work-life balance.

    Cons

The pay is extremely low for the level of knowledge and skills. Upper management can be distant and aloof--not personable. Many leaders lack management/leadership skills even though they have technical knowledgeable. Promotions are often based on who you know. Work can lack challenge.

    Pros

You can move to different agencies very easily. The benefits are great. Lots of holidays and time off. Many good people work for the state.

    Cons

Hard to get a pay raise. Overworked at times. Don't see positive changes from upper management.

    Program Support Tech

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great Benefits, multiple locations to choose from if you are mobile. Good continuing education packages and perks for cultural events in the state

    Cons

Depending on the agency, poor compensation. Raises are based on petitions from the general assembly. Unless in upper management a single person can't afford living alone without a part-time job. Not enough to live, but too much for assistance.

Great opportunity for public service-just don't challenge

Sep 8, 2021 - Magistrate in Richmond, VA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Position of authority and great responsibility. Independence in Judgement Serving the public and LEO with esteem

    Cons

Far removed from Richmond-difficulty receiving assistance from HR in most matters. Cliques and favortism are pervasive but alive in regions. Upper Management misses it even after an investigation. Some supervisors are bullies and reward bad behavior. Fair implementation of policies and procedures/benefits are not applied consistently, depends on who you are and connection to supervisor.

    Stay away from Norfolk DCSE!!!

Oct 19, 2018 - Support Enforcement Specialist in Norfolk, VA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Depending on your supervisor, you can take leave whenever you want. Mine doesn’t micromanage, but she also doesn’t make sure you’re trained properly. So, I guess you have to pick which one you can deal with.

    Cons

You will NOT be trained...PERIOD!! There are a few (and I mean A FEW) classroom training courses, but nothing that will help you as a Support Enforcement Specialist. Their idea of “training” is having you briefly sit with people in different departments watching them fly through screens of a system they aren’t even supposed to be using. They don’t use the new system because they aren’t used to it, have been there forever, & don’t like change. Upper management doesn’t give a doggone about anyone there. You are paid to fill a seat and collect money from NCPs. They don’t care that the training is non-existent & look at suggestions as complaints. The environment is extremely TOXIC & they don’t welcome new staff. They basically harass them daily by asking how long they’re going to stay or if they plan on staying. It is a very sad place to work & I will never suggest anyone work there if you are used to structured training or want to be truly successful at it. Most of the staff that were pleasant admitted that they cried daily there for MONTHS when they first started. Not me...I will quit first!
