    Pros

In the Financial Aid department the Director and Assistant Director provided such great professional support and development because of it you were able to grow within the college. The atmosphere was very relaxed and calm, we worked as a team and had team development opportunities and activities. The staff felt like that of a family. The Directors utilized staffs skills and strengths to better serve the department and the students. Such a great stepping stone into higher education. The pay was good enough for entry level positions and benefits were very satisfactory.

    Cons

I truly loved coming to work everyday because of the things I noted above and it was very hard for me to find anything wrong with College.

    Advice to Management

Keep supporting the staff and use their skills and strengths to evolve campus'.

I worked at Community College of Allegheny County part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, wonderful department heads. CCAC has 4 campuses, each with its own management, culture, and department chairs, so your mileage may vary. Many of the students are interested in transferring to four-year colleges. Very diverse student bodies.

    Cons

The adjuncts finally have a union, which should help. The pay is lower than some, though consistent with many other colleges in the Pittsburgh area. The differences between campuses can be challenging as well as rewarding.

I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County full-time

    Pros

Health Care, Retirement (2 to 1 match on 5%, no vesting), Vacation (5-weeks)

    Cons

There is a reason why there are many openings (7 for department of about 40) because it is a complete mess. We have had 3 different CIOs in three years. The current CIO’s goal is to move everything to the cloud and/or have vendors install everything for every project. Slowly we are all becoming server and application monitors. If there is a problem you are told to just call the vendor. You will not gain any expertise in any CCAC IT position. All you will do is attend committee meetings and be told about project management.

I would only recommend working here if you are near the end of your career and need a place to stay. If you are just starting out look somewhere else because all you will learn here is how to spot a problem and use a phone.

CCAC hires at the minimum to up to 5k more than minimum not a penny more. I know a developer that put in a couple of years, just left and doubled his salary.

Senior leadership at CCAC is horrible. The current president just creates more and more high paying senior positions and wastes a ton of money on stupidity.

    Advice to Management

Need to clean house and eliminate top heavy positions.

    Pros

    There are not any pros.

    Cons

If your an adjunct you are not appreciated
You work harder than the full timers and are not appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate the full timers , allow input from adjuncts , care about the students not just your own salaries and pensions.

I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good amount of autonomy in the classroom. Solid support staff. "Some" administrators make a honest effort to foster positive campus environment.

    Cons

Some full-time faculty tend to look down on adjuncts. Many/most adjuncts feel like 2nd class citizens. This has a direct impact in the classroom as some dispirited professors just mail it in.
Low morale pretty much across the board which also leads to rampant gossip & negativity.
Very limited advancement opportunities - it's much cheaper to hire adjuncts since salary is low & benefits are nonexistent.
Grading integrity is an issue (although admin denies it, of course) - system can be biased towards undeserving students.
Many adjuncts feel tremendous pressure to pass everyone (despite merit) to gain favorable student evaluations so that they can continue to get assignments.
Frequent turnover at the top (multiple presidents over past several years) has resulted in shifting directives as each incoming administration changes the agenda.
Virtually no accountability for senior admin (these are basically lifetime appointments unless they decide to go elsewhere); the grievance system is completely broken & many refuse to use it due to fear of retribution.
Many adjuncts feel that union (dues are mandatory) does not care about them - only FT faculty. Ample evidence abounds.
Basically, some of the unprofessional conduct tolerated here would never be allowed at a "typical" 4-year institution.

    Advice to Management

CCAC needs better communication & transparency. Fire senior admin. (and you know who they are) who lack integrity & should never be allowed near students. Stress quality over quantity (more students enrolled may mean more $ for CCAC but does that really serve the "educational" mission of the college?)

    Lots of support
    Flexible schedule
    Teach not parent

    Cons

    Curriculum changes at each campus
    Constant push to increase retention
Students go to dean about everything
Dean pushes to pass troublesome students
    Adjunct scheduling is a disaster

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I work at the West Hills Center. The staff is friendly, the work is no overly demanding or unfair. We have a great union. The pay is good and the benefits are incredible.

    Cons

Work gossip can be a problem, but that's why you report to administrators if there is an issue. Sometimes students/faculty/visitors can be rude or pushy, but you just have to keep a cool head.
