I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are no pros to this place.

    Cons

This department is in shambles. People leave and positions are not replaced. The technology is very out of date.

Currently everything is in limbo. There are no challenging projects where you gain any experience. You are a server janitor and any design is done by vendors. There is no opportunities for advancement. The development that is done is very juvenile. The developers fail to use any new technologies like Xamarin, Node, Angular, React, etc and just use outdated DotNetNuke as their platform. Their idea of a mobile app is using bootstrap to format a website. Pitiful.

Lastly, two people that were hired into new positions left the college within 6 months. Yes, it is that bad!

    Advice to Management

Time to clean house. The board needs to start with the college president and work down.

Many bullies at the Deans level and higher
    Unfair work place.
    Micromanaged to the hilt
    Confusing and cumbersome process

    Advice to Management

Internal process needs tons of work. Very cumbersome Remove bullies ! Don’t hire and promote for political reasons.

I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Hours scheduled around Class schedule, friendly staff, work on campus. Flexible job positions. +$10 an hour if you are a tutor.

    Cons

Some staff fail to respect student workers. Lack of organization in admissions events, low quality advertising. Basically bottom rung.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your student workers, respect their opinions. They're human beings and often adults just like you.

I worked at Community College of Allegheny County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits and time off. It is also rewarding to help students achieve success. There isn’t anything that I would consider positive other than that.

    Cons

Employee discrimination based on race and gender is prevalent. Job positions, responsibilities and pay are way over due for an audit and reorg.

    Advice to Management

Hire people that can do the job. Don’t hire based on gender/race and pawn work they are not capable of doing onto the capable employees.

I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County part-time

    Pros

    Support staff has been great.

    Cons

The pay is not enough to make a living.

There is little opportunity for advancement in some departments -- the school prefers to spend money churning through part-time faculty instead of hiring more full-time faculty.

This also leads to having too many faculty members, which decreases the per-person class load (and decreases pay).

Advancement is not clearly related to merit or performance.

Faculty seem view novel pedagogical approaches unfavorably.

    Advice to Management

Spend less money looking for part-time faculty and invest in full-time faculty.

Make advancement tied to merit and/or job performance.

I have been working at Community College of Allegheny County part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Exposure to an incredibly diverse community, in age, ethnicity, nationality and more, brings classes alive and they are filled with interested students who really want to learn.

    Cons

Difficult, if not impossible, to move into full-time status, so you cannot support yourself with just this employment

I worked at Community College of Allegheny County part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, wonderful department heads. CCAC has 4 campuses, each with its own management, culture, and department chairs, so your mileage may vary. Many of the students are interested in transferring to four-year colleges. Very diverse student bodies.

    Cons

The adjuncts finally have a union, which should help. The pay is lower than some, though consistent with many other colleges in the Pittsburgh area. The differences between campuses can be challenging as well as rewarding.
