I have been working at Community College of Philadelphia full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Free benefits, Fridays off in the summer months, spring break and winter break and the fact that you are helping students to further their educational background.

    Cons

Collective Bargaining Agreement makes it hard to get anything that is more up to date implemented.

I have been working at Community College of Philadelphia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are phenomenal -- high-quality health insurance with 100% of the premiums covered by the College (note that this may not continue once new contracts are negotiated). Working with students can be challenging, but ultimately rewarding. Tons of vacation, sick and personal time, plus Fridays off in the summer.

    Cons

The unionized environment yields the great benefits mentioned above, but makes the advancement process difficult. There is an internal bidding system for union jobs, and positions are filled based on seniority only (assuming the candidate can pass the typing, Microsoft Office, etc. tests that are required). This means that mediocre employees who expend minimal effort on the job are often promoted over much more talented or hardworking employees, which is frustrating to watch. This also means that someone with no experience in a particular department may get a job over someone who has been there for years, simply because they have more overall seniority at the College. Similarly, there are no raises for merit, and even when you move to a higher salary grade, the increase in pay happens on a fixed scale -- no negotiation. So if you accept a job here, fight for the highest pay rate you can manage, because if you begin with a wage at the lower end of your salary grade, it will stay that way the entire time you're here.

I worked at Community College of Philadelphia full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful student population, excellent health benefits, pretty good pay. Automatic tenure after five years.

    Cons

Horrible institutional culture. Very top-down structure, lots of within- and between-dept in-fighting and turf-warring. Admin disrespect for faculty.

I have been working at Community College of Philadelphia full-time

    Pros

New leadership is making a real difference in great ways. Many, many wonderful and talented people. The best is simply the amazing students that you get to work with. It's an exciting time to be there.

    Cons

Entrenched departments and a "fiefdom" mentality of some.

    Advice to Management

Really ask and listen to comments about obstacles to success. Focus on human capital instead of rules for the sake or rules.

I have been working at Community College of Philadelphia part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay rate is pretty good for most part time faculty, with some partially paid benefits available. Bring able to work directly with students is the best part and keeps me coming back despite chronic institutional problems. Some pretty good professional development opportunities too.

    Cons

Senior management does not believe in the college's mission, is more interested in making the college more corporate and looking good on paper than in actually educating. The organizational culture is stagnant, bureaucratic, and increasingly intrusive with surveillance. HR has a paternalistic attitude toward staff and contingent faculty, assumes employees are slackers and scammers; have known to dig through security camera footage and ID card swipe logs to 'get' employees on minor technical violations. FT faculty whine about reduced availability of sabbaticals while adjuncts and lowest paid staff can barely make ends meet. Adjunct faculty are second class citizens and actively disrespected.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like naughty children, listen to feedback and act on it, reduce the number of administrators instead of cutting benefits or work hours for part time faculty. Board needs to be transparent: no more secret "executive sessions"

    Pros

    The Summer Hours are great!!!!
In the summer we work Monday thru Thursday 8:00am to 5:30pm.
    Love it.
You are able to get things done on Fridays off.

    Cons

The con is when you have to go back to the regular hours after the summer which is Monday thru Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.
    Now that sucks!!!

    Advice to Management

As of now I do not have any complaints, however I think there should be a push to higher from within before outsourcing if you have qualified candidates.
    Its an investment!!!!!
