I have been working at Composite Engineering Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This is a relatively small company working on large DOD contracts competing with Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop, Raytheon, etc. There is plenty of opportunity for good engineers to learn new skills and to be a key contributor to the big picture. It is easy to be noticed and move up quickly. On the other hand, poor performance is also noticed quickly due to the nature of a small organization. Engineers here are not pigeon holed and are able to work on a multitude of projects requiring various technical skills.

    Cons

This company suffers from the typical growing pains of a small company going big. Sometimes programs are underbid and understaffed.

    Advice to Management

It's ok to turn down work when you don't have the resources to finish the work you've got.

    Pros

Exciting and interesting Products. Involved in entire manufacturing process.

    Cons

Employees are overworked. Overtime is expected of Salaried employees. There was a layoff one week, followed by an overtime request the following. The harder you work, the more they give you to complete. Management leads with fear and a loud voice (this did improve later on). The Business Development team underbids and overcommits on contracts. They have even been known to sell technology that has not been invented yet.

    Advice to Management

Hold Business development accountable for their unrealistic bids. Reward employees who work hard and long hours. Improve work/life balance. Stop yelling and lead by example.

I have been working at Composite Engineering Inc full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting product line, most of which serves to train our military personnel and keep them safer. Developing products could sustain the company for decades if successful.

    Cons

Current management has no clue what we actually build, and tries to manage the company as if it were a high-tech service provider and not manufacturing.

    Advice to Management

Use the knowledge of the people you hire as an asset, not something that has be trained out of them.

I have been working at Composite Engineering Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They make interesting niche products. They know how to manufacture with composites. Manufacturing is their strength.
Being such a small company allows one to see many areas and move around to different fields. Every part of the company is close together.

    Cons

This small company is trying to play in a big company arena as a DOD contractor but is failing in many regards. Much of this can be traced back to its top-down dictatorial management style. Employees and employee input are not valued. They are willing to throw one of their own under the bus to get out of a tight spot. This leads to very low moral and high turn-over. I have watched some of the finest engineering talent walk out the door.
Partial successes are over-sold. This comes back to bite the company over and over when it is time to perform. Very telling is the internal motto amongst employees: "Over-commit and Under-perform". The company has not learned how to apply sound engineering principles and to plan programs realistically.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to stop micro-managing everything. Let the experts in their respective areas do their jobs. They need to foster an environment of respect and team work and stop the internal back-stabbing and bullying. Middle management must be given the authority to execute industry proven engineering and management philosophies. They should not be used solely as a pass-through conduit for directives from above. The company needs a shake up at the highest level to establish a healthy and productive work environment.

I worked at Composite Engineering Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Because it is a small company you have the ability to do a variety of things and I was able to do a variety ot tasks and learn a lot of things.

    Cons

You never felt that management trusted any employee. You were micromanged from the President down and once purchased by Kratos it was even more so.

    Advice to Management

They need a consultant to come in and look how the company is being run. Being a start up and from owners with no prior work experience there are some major concerns about the structure and management of how the company bids there work and manages their staff. There was no management training.

I worked at Composite Engineering Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Direct access to Senior Management. Good product. Customers like the product and provide good feedback to the employees. Feels good to see the Target fly. Pride of product.

    Cons

Untrained Senior Management. Relies on inexperienced Managers to execute. Volatile work environment - confrontational. Heard they are working on resolving that issue. Small group of "Untouchables".

    Advice to Management

Just because the person has been with the company forever doesn't mean they can do the job. Hire the right people with the right experience to perform the job and listen to their recommendations. Crack down on the aggressive behavior from managers.

    Pros

    None, None, None, None, None.

    Cons

This company sanctions bullying. I had to leave the company to get away from it. The senior management treats women differently from men. CEi uses employees and then terminates them. Their turnover rate is high in many departments, and employee satisfaction is very low. The employees do not trust management. The previous HR VP walked off the job due to the poor treatment of women.

    Pros

    High level of accountability & recognition; exciting products with many challenges for engineers; opportunity to gain experience in several aspects of the business;

    Cons

    Some degree of micromanagement; demands on personal time can be very high during certain periods; facility is located in a less than desirable area;

    Advice to Management

Allow your most competent employees to lead teams that have some autonomy in how they do their jobs; continue to clear out those who are not up to the level of competence required.

    Pros

Both facilities are in good locations. Quite good pay and benefits for a smaller company. The owners (married couple) really do seem to care.

    Cons

They call themselves "thick skinned" in meetings and in interviews but they dont realize its because its a silo environment. Too much reactive problem solving.

    Advice to Management

With some culture change there is potential for this company to become quite successful. Their ability to build great aerospace product for less and faster is their competitive advantage.
