    Pros

    Great learning environment for software developers of all levels. Difficult problems to deal with on a daily basis. Love that the office is in downtown Denver.

    Cons

    Annual review process for developers is mostly subjective, unclear, and poorly explained/communicated. Just to be clear I don't have issue with the compensation itself, but on how or why we got to that number.

    The other minor problem is that metrics are subjective and per individual on performance reviews. This is a problem because it is often emphasized that collaboration and teamwork are the foundations of how software is built at Comverge. So the annual snarky comment going around during review time is "We want you to work collaboratively to achieve individual goals".

    Advice to Management

    It would be better if bonuses and raises where allotted per team. Allow team lead(s) to distribute.

    Nice place to work, interesting field and opportunity for growth within.

    Cons

    The company's work, growth and jobs are driven by utility sales, which can sometimes be slow due to state run incentive programs.

    I have been working at Comverge full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    It's fun being in software development and knowing you're working on something important for the future of the world. Comverge is in the clean energy sector, and the employees almost all feel as if what they are working on is important.

    This is a very family-friendly company. While developers typically work in pairs, and it is important to be at the office most days, the company is also very flexible if you need to work from home on occasion. Arrival and departure times average 8:45 AM and 5:00 PM, respectively, but are very flexible depending on personal circumstances. Fairly rare for developers to have to work late nights or weekends.

    Benefits are in-line with other software companies. PTO is 15 days first 4 years. 3% matching 401(k), good health/dental/vision options, standard disability and life insurance. Some tuition payment benefits if you want to continue education while working.

    Snacks and coffee/tea stocked in the kitchen. AMAZING VIEWS of the Rocky Mountains from the 23rd floor of our downtown skyscraper.

    Cons

    PTO policy seems a bit stringent when other software companies can advertise "unlimited" PTO.

    Can be difficult to get managerial feedback about performance and long-term development plans.

    Since headquarters are in Atlanta, sometimes the developers feel cut off from the long-term visions and plans for the rest of the company.

    Open floor plan layout can be difficult on more introverted developers.

    Advice to Management

    Keep working on developing the Atlanta/Denver ties. Come up with a few more places in the office for a developer to "hide" if they need to be away from the noise of the open floor plan.

    Cons

    Appalling (lack) of leadership, CEO floats around like a well dressed prima donna without engaging with staff, shocking management, and subsequent decisions, over-reach in 2011/12 leading to 10% lay off's! Whilst there were some wonderful people there (they know who they are), the company was one of the worst I have ever worked for.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your people and respect them and their efforts more - reward them!

    Everyone was nice and easy to get along with. Enough people knew what they were doing to get things done.

    Pros

    Comverge offers a good work/life balance and decent salary/benefits offering. First level management is very passionate and talented, which leads them to invest their time to cultivate entry level talent.

    Cons

    When upper level management is requesting employees to write positive reviews on boards such as this, you know there is an issue they are failing to get in front of. If you're not a team member from one of the CEO's past lives, then you're not "in" the club. Upper level management is like a fraternity that follows each other from company to company - it doesn't matter what they can offer the company or it's employees, it's obvious they are there strictly because of the relationship they've maintained. You see a lot of strong talent quickly leave the company because there isn't any true investment or management coming from the senior executives/managers.

    Advice to Management

    Put action behind your words to see an improved company culture, and stop the revolving door of employee turnover.
