    Pros

Really good experience, exposure, and opportunity for new hires.

If you don't like the rain, sun, and snow, this job will not be for you. There will be office position 1-2 years down the line but they definitely put new guys in supervisor roles outdoors to experience what it's like.

    Cons

Rain, sun, and snow. Not for the sensitive.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with the young culture out there, that a lot of companies are doing this "feel good vibe" among employees now and that's a good thing. Yes, it's a true a job needs to be done. But let's get rid of the ol' tight lips and manchismo of the salt of the earth union workers politics. We get enough of that from, you know, the literal earth we drill into.

I have been working at Con Edison full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to change jobs. I have had several different career paths here. It's good to know that your work contributes to the health of New York City.

    Cons

Company needs to focus more on personal achievement.. Too much setting on mediocrity. Too bureaucratic. Turns off high achievers.

    Advice to Management

    Lead by actions not slogans.

I worked at Con Edison full-time

    Pros

Great company, great employees. Has shown a real commitment to advancing women to upper management roles.

    Cons

Union involvement makes it easy to get away with a lot, and hard to compensate people for hard work. Extremely hard organization to make change. Very little focus on poor managers who continue to drive away employees.

    Advice to Management

Work harder to adapt to changing environment, push managers to focus on employees, or you'll continue to lose young talent.

    Pros

Relaxed, laid back culture where there's not a lot of stress. Everyone is friendly and you almost always feel welcome

    Cons

Kind of slow, and you don't always feel like you're getting a lot done. A lot of the technology is behind on the times.

    Advice to Management

Look to hire more ambitious people.

I have been working at Con Edison full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Contrasted with other career choices, this is great for indivdiuals that need to stay close to home. The entire business is contained within driving distance. For those aspiring to drive change and improvement in a business, there is plenty of opportunity if you're able to persist and overcome resistance. Individuals love to talk about their jobs and share technical information. Although the benefit program has changed leaving some of the long-term employees upset, it is a terrific benefits package; people who have worked elsewhere truly appreciate it.

    Cons

Most employees including management are lifers and those are the ones receiving opportunities and rewards. It is a struggle to find any manager, director or VP promoted to the next level who has been with the company less than 10 years. External hires should be sure to get hired into the position they want because they will be there for a long time. Similarly, ideas from external hires are often disregarded, not rudely or overtly, merely ignored.

    Advice to Management

When promoting or staffing for new opportunities, consider whether selections may be biased by longevity. When benchmarking, include non-utilities, especially for non-utility functions. As more competitive threats are evovling in the marketplace, being the best utility may not be good enough.

    Pros

There is a great team of Supervisors and technical advisors there.

    Cons

The 12 hour days, 7 days a week was killer.

    Advice to Management

Make sure to communicate with Each of you workers under your care, including the 'vendors' aka consultants as I was left in a location fore 22 hours (Someone forgot to tell the shift manager I was out there)

Establish good relationships with many professional and senior engineers. The work environment is nice and comfortable.

The innovation is not so much required. Young people seeking exiting work experience maybe feel somehow unsatisfied.
