I worked at Con Edison as an intern

    Pros

Great work experience as far as a post-freshman year internship goes.

    Cons

    Little involvement with other interns

    Advice to Management

Create a better network between interns

    Pros

Really good experience, exposure, and opportunity for new hires.

If you don't like the rain, sun, and snow, this job will not be for you. There will be office position 1-2 years down the line but they definitely put new guys in supervisor roles outdoors to experience what it's like.

    Cons

Rain, sun, and snow. Not for the sensitive.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with the young culture out there, that a lot of companies are doing this "feel good vibe" among employees now and that's a good thing. Yes, it's a true a job needs to be done. But let's get rid of the ol' tight lips and manchismo of the salt of the earth union workers politics. We get enough of that from, you know, the literal earth we drill into.

I worked at Con Edison as an intern

    Pros

I worked as an Analyst Aide Temporary (summer intern) at Con Edison for two years. I was able to get hands-on experience in the business world and was treated like a real employee (as opposed to simply making copies or filing papers). I also had a fairly wide range of capabilities in the company.

    Cons

There were lulls in workload. Some weeks I would be extremely busy whereas others I would be very bored. Depending on the department, the intern program was either super organized or fairly chaotic.

    Advice to Management

Make sure managers know exactly how to utilize interns and Coops. We are a great resource as long as we know what our responsibilities and capabilities are.

I have been working at Con Edison full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to change jobs. I have had several different career paths here. It's good to know that your work contributes to the health of New York City.

    Cons

Company needs to focus more on personal achievement.. Too much setting on mediocrity. Too bureaucratic. Turns off high achievers.

    Advice to Management

    Lead by actions not slogans.

I worked at Con Edison full-time

    Pros

Great company, great employees. Has shown a real commitment to advancing women to upper management roles.

    Cons

Union involvement makes it easy to get away with a lot, and hard to compensate people for hard work. Extremely hard organization to make change. Very little focus on poor managers who continue to drive away employees.

    Advice to Management

Work harder to adapt to changing environment, push managers to focus on employees, or you'll continue to lose young talent.

    Pros

Many varied opportunities for advancement or movement within a huge utility company

    Cons

Expect managers to be available virtually all the time and work in excess of the normal workday without expectation of overtime. Overtime paid at straight time rate for management personnel.
    Limited time off!

    Advice to Management

Expand the benefits package - particularly time off.
