I worked at Con-way Freight (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay and hours were good

    Cons

The company had no true sense of direction, but more of a "ready, fire, aim" approach

    Advice to Management

Quit the LEAN stuff and just stick to what works. Listen to the customer and the employee and stop giving the farm away.

    I worked at Con-way Freight full-time

    Pros

Your supervisors will expect you to learn the Transportation Industry in a very short period of time- essentially, you will have two weeks to learn a specific area or task before moving to another area for two weeks. The operations supervisors are EXTREMELY helpful and will spend a lot of time teaching you, if you pay attention.

    Cons

The senior management at Con-Way freight is terrible - they see you as a number. The lack of respect the senior managers had for the drivers led me to leave. The salary is a bit low - believe me, you will put in at least 60 hours a week to earn that sub-50,000 salary.

    Advice to Management

Respect your drivers. They work their butts off and shouldn't be treated as a number. Putting in a ton of effort in six sigma is useless when you don't even know half your drivers' names.

I worked at Con-way Freight (More than a year)

    Pros

Compensation is decent. Work schedules are fixed and seldom include weekends at spoke terminals.

    Cons

Regimented and stratified work environment, with uniforms and strict enforcement of rules, some beneficial, others pointless.

    Advice to Management

Show employee appreciation as part of daily culture with regular positive feedback rather than just a barbecue sandwich once a year.
