    I worked at Con-way Freight full-time

    Pros

Nice facility, great people, well laid out data warehouse

    Cons

Sometimes monotonous. Plenty of overlooked opportunities within the business in terms of operations and human capital; perhaps better after XPO buyout?

    Pros

    Always growing and many opportunities

    Cons

Forgot the GREAT people that built this company ... Saturday Spruce up at terminals volunteered for free... 60 mph trucks , no power steering, no A/C , Made due with what we had and built a successful company ... Management forgot all about this and the sacrifices the drivers made to build this company ...

    Advice to Management

Maybe get back to the old company values and ethics that built this company into a powerful transportation entity ... This " NEW" way is slowly but most definitely making this company an also ran ... not the elite the original men and women built !

I worked at Con-way Freight full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

hourly was very good at 19.17/hr and the work itself was easy enough. Customers and co-workers were easy to get along with as well.

    Cons

no overtime pay until you reached 50 hours. Half of the work day (evening) was spent moving freight on the dock. also, the days were any were from 12 to 16 hours.

I worked at Con-way Freight (Less than a year)

    Pros

    * benefits
    * culture
    *values
    * by far: the people you are in the trenches with, are your family

    Cons

    * Upper management ONLY worries about the bottom line...If anyone knows the logistics business, they know there has to be some give and go: there are know absolutes...

    Advice to Management

Sadly you will never learn until you take your head out of the books, stop crunching imaginary numbers, and actually get your butts in a tractor with the drivers or on the dock with the people...of course the " number-cruncher's " and " engineers " will never do this

I worked at Con-way Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

started in XIN (Indianapolis) (great place to work at) transferred to XAU aurora il and XLA lasalle il. the longer the run the more money. if lower in seniority may not get the longer better paying runs. lower in seniority also means you get the last loads out. if you stick it out long enough you will move up depending on the drivers ahead of you. The pay is decent.

    Cons

Loads are not always ready when they call you in for a start time. you had to call in every night for a lineup and sometimes you get called in at 9 and wont get you loads until 10 or 11 at night making you sit there for 1-3 hours. long hours, the hours varied on runs, loads, break downs of other drivers. longer runs with lower seniority often left new drivers pushing the limit of the 14 or 16 hour rule. loaded your own trailer making it a long stressful night when long freight came down the dock and you are on your last trailer and its 3/4 full

    Advice to Management

get away from max loading 100% cube cant always happen. would make less stress and damages to fright. hire more dock workers and train them more. find fright that's not so difficult to load, long pipe and steel should be flat bed fright.

    Pros

Paid training. Great DSR's and CSR's. Awesome fellow supervisors. Flexible time off. Lots of locations nationwide. All promotions come within.

    Cons

The WORST Service center manager I have ever worked for. Have to relocate to move up. Manager was not willing to relocate me back there I was promised I would be working.

    Pros

Con-way has a great culture and it shows in what they do for their people. I recommend Con-way Freight as an employer

    Cons

Long hours and late night or early morning shifts really cuts into your family time. When you run around the clock somebody ends up with the short end of the stick/

    Advice to Management

I think management should manage the basics of freight and not focus on the metrics so stringently. I think it will really show that you're not micro managing your team.
