I worked at Conroe Independent School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Well-managed district, pay is good for teachers, lots of district pride, very professional place to work. Large enough that there's plenty offered to keep staff well-informed and well-prepared but it's not so large that it's a "big city" school. Definitely a place where I enjoyed working for 8 years. I felt valued there.

    Cons

Not super progressive in terms of teaching methods. Still very "test-focused". Para-educators and support staff aren't paid proportionally to the teachers. They are paid "market value" and in comparison with the districts around CISD. Hard to get a job with CISD.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to change! CISD doesn't know everything there is to know about teaching. There should be more influence in teaching methodology from outside, more progressive sources.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Lots of training during the school year and summer.

    Cons

If you are at a school with high turnover it is due to the mismanagement, lies, and manipulation of the administrators. The district will not support the teachers in these situations as it makes them look bad to have such unprofessional principals in positions of total authority. If you are in a school where most of the staff is extremely unhappy you will be expected to work 60 hours a week, change student grades, and accept that the admin will cover up sexual harassment and violence by students.

    Advice to Management

If all means all that should include the teachers. Stop making excuses for for the principals that have teachers leaving every year due to misconduct of their leadership.

    Pros

The maintenance department is very laid back. If you like to take it slow and easy this is the place to be. Money is no object they will throw as much money as they need on a project to get it fixed and if it still don't work they will call in an outside contractor to fix it.

    Cons

Low wages as compared to private sector. Don't ask for a raise, you will be disappointed.
"Good old boy system"! Can not emphasize that enough if you are not in with the boys you are no one.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the old timers and bring in energetic folks who are willing to work.

    Pros

Competitive pay. Great professional development. Loved the PLCs. Passionate teachers willing to go above and beyond for their students! Wonderfully diverse population of students.

    Cons

Standardized testing always seems to ruin the teaching environment. Pressure to teach the test in order to improve student scores.

    Pros

Great company to work for, great beginning for a career, very supportive people. Great opportunities to improve. Great transition coming from a different background.

    Cons

Education system in general is not doing good so the district has to follow rules, little room for improvement is policies are not working properly.

    Advice to Management

People is the most important resource.
