I worked at ConsenSys full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

At ConsenSys you are a free person. While reporting requirements do vary by team, in general ConsenSys employees have a lot of agency to work wherever they think they can contribute the most value. If you are okay operating in ambiguous environments, you'll do fine at ConsenSys.

    Cons

Some people abuse the freedom ConsenSys offers, which is discouraging. If you are not the type of person comfortable with ambiguity, and who enjoys receiving detailed instruction, ConsenSys will be tough for you.

    Pros

    Cons

    > You have to be proactive in order to get the most out of your experience

      I worked at ConsenSys full-time

      Pros

Wants to push the envelope and change the way the world functions, for the best

      Cons

People management is the worst. Holacracy does not work or was not well implemented. Lack of short or long-term strategy. Too many freeloaders

I have been working at ConsenSys full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      Remote work allows work/life balance.

      Cons

I don't know how to contact HR if any issue. There isn't defined protocols on how to report your point of view on how things are working. Very hierarchical and very centralized.

      Advice to Management

Don't claim to be what you are not.

I worked at ConsenSys full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

      - 100% support and trust for remote-first work - worked with some amazing, intelligent, truly revolutionary humans - I learned a ton about myself and deepened my understanding of what I want to do during my time on this planet, about Blockchain technology, about what works, about what not to do (this is the most valuable!) - I believe the founder is a deeply kind and trusting person

      Cons

      - vision and values communicated by founder (decentralisation, transparency, kindness, non-violent communication) did not align to actions taken (or more importantly not taken) in the company, often the opposite happened and went unadressed - closeness to the founder and being a white dude over the age of 40 were highly correlated with power and authority ($$ and information) - grew extremely fast & threw a lot...

I have been working at ConsenSys full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Super happy with my team, leadership from my spoke. I really love my job, the work I'm doing, and the doors it's opened for me. I used to work at a large big 4 corporation, and am much more fulfilled at Consensys, despite taking a paycut and not getting the same benefits/perks. It has been really rewarding and I'm very happy, and see myself staying in my spoke for years.

      Cons

Don't believe some of these ridiculous reviews... ConsenSys did not "fire all black people" like one review says. I am a woman of color. I know who wrote this review, and he literally never did any work and would just troll people all day on slack. Many who were laid off, not all, were performance-related. Some people would ~literally~ never do work, be bad for Consensys, etc, because in a remote, self-organized environment,...

I worked at ConsenSys full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Get broad exposure to decentralized applications and the Ethereum ecosystem. Get inspired by the big ambitions of different projects. Get on the right team and become world class in building decentralized applications. A truly global company, with people from all kinds of industries and locations.

      Cons

Despite being an organization that wants to promote inclusion and transparency there are teams that have a subculture promoting the opposite. I took a paycut and joined Consensys because I was interested in learning and getting exposure to Ethereum application development. Unfortunately I ended up on a team where the leadership spoke of the Consensys principals but the actions were the opposite. Instead of creating...

      Advice to Management

Hold teams accountable. If they do have a culture so vastly difference from Consensys they should make it known from the onset and their actions should reflect their words.

        Pros

Networking Innovative environment Flexible work hours, travel, work from home No day-to-day routine Pay is decent

        Cons

Hard to create value as a non-software dev Company built for/around developers, only top level management have value. Unclear expectations, no clear tasks or training Very flat structure

I worked at ConsenSys full-time for more than a year

        Pros

First off, I loved and still do the remote-first attitude of ConsenSys. Regardless of what size it is future, past and present is chock full of incredibly passionate, visionary individuals who do their jobs with incredible drive. You can have as much exposure as you'd like to cutting edge technology in the Ethereum space. Most parts of ConsenSys are incredibly open and "decentralized" if you're bold enough to let your...

        Cons

Growing too fast can be a curse as much as a blessing. Lead to a lot of painful experiences dealing with HR/hiring. Inter-mesh matters were also quite messy, time consuming and distracting as well. Having one's next paycheck potentially dependent on the price of a crypto-asset can be un-nerving for some as well (though hopefully the new business focused phase of 2.0 will change that).

        Advice to Management

Basic compensation models and benefits really need to be ironed out so current and future employees know what they're getting themselves into from a base-line perspective. I admire the drive to make projects within ConsenSys more profit driven in the future and look forward to seeing how that pans out.

        Pros

ConsenSys is filled with bright, driven people who are devoted to bringing about the collective vision for a better future. ConsenSys is what you make of it - throw your back in, devote time and energy, and connect with your coworkers and it will be an incredible experience. You have to acknowledge and embrace the shortcomings of a young company - but the beauty of Consensys is that everyone is empowered to take steps...

        Cons

ConsenSys has had a rough year, undoubtedly. Expansion too quick under the lead of some people who weren't well equipped led to people being laid off. That is the unfortunate - but frequent and inevitable - fate of all tech start-ups. ConsenSys will be stronger after this. I believe ConsenSys has learned from its mistakes and will put in place firm new standards to ensure history does not repeat itself.
