I have been working at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Important work, highly academic atmosphere in Research, Markets, and Regulations, best group of colleagues you could ask for.

    Cons

Occasional sleepiness of government work - but pretty much as good as it gets.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing great work! Management consistently overcomes the bureaucracy to help their team.

    Pros

Management sees its employees as its greatest assets. In my own opinion, management willingness to accommodate every employees needs including the ones that are nonsensical could actually demoralized the high performers.

    Cons

Management sometimes bend too much backward to accommodate unappreciative employees. Performance appraisals should be changed to a system that will encourage everyone employee to want to perform at a high level and should include impressive compensation for high performers.

    Advice to Management

    You cannot please everyone.

    Pros

Good Insurance and some employees that really try to help.

    Cons

There is no work life balance, Examiners have unnecessary travel for exams sending examiners to opposite states when the could work close to home. Regions operate differently proving there is no consistency within the bureau.
All employees are forced to put up with the same unfairness that we hold big banks accountable for? New hires are paid more than the people that have been here 6 years with similar professional backgrounds.

Senior management is depending on a high turn over rate so they won't have to address the major issues such as pay discrepancies, favoritism and the horrible commissioning process that changes from day to day.
This really is a bad place to have any kind of career.

    Advice to Management

Stop patting yourself on the back, learn some humility and don't be afraid to stand up for the real problems and issues we have.

I have been working at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is outstanding. Telework and Alternative Work Schedules available. Benefits all around are outstanding. Paternity and maternity leave available (you have to use accrued sick leave). The mission is amazing, but...

    Cons

Nepotism, favoritism, and retaliation are rampant. Management holds meetings to discuss who is "in" and who is "out." If you're out, no advancement is possible and you are marginalized. Inexperienced personnel is also rampant with few industry experienced personnel making any decisions or in leadership type positions. Mistrust is around every corner; any idea you suggest is typically stolen by someone else and they're given credit for it. Racism, reverse discrimination, and elitism is everywhere.

    Advice to Management

A wholesale leadership change is desperately needed. Any senior management (60-71s and up) needs to go. Experienced industry professionals would be a breath of fresh air.

    Pros

The mission is great, and the people are dedicated. There is extensive travel within the regionally assigned area, which can be nice if you like seeing new places.

    Cons

Management is the typical, stereotyped federal bureaucracy. The operational and training required for the job are tedious, and at times, ridiculous.

I have been working at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Extremely talented people from a wide range of backgrounds (government and private sector)
    * Mission-oriented -- people are here because they want to be here
    * Still has a start-up feel; fast-paced

    Cons

    * Government bureaucracy for hiring, procurement, and all other administrative tasks
    * Fast-paced sometimes means chaotic, with leadership changing frequently and strategy shifting frequently
    * Risk that it will be de-funded by a new congress
