I have been working at Continental Guest Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Experience in Hospitality industry. 1 pair of tickets(once in a while)for free to see a show. Meet people from all over the world. pick up new language (German or french) flexible with schedule (makes up for poor pay) They accept excuses like: short bank or tardiness.

    Cons

$15-17 an hr only. no raise, ever. No female management. They do steal hours. Are spiteful with scheduling. Give you the run around all the time. Management will make you pay money back to the company for mistakes made that caused loss in revenue.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring weirdos. Replace ticket manager MM. Stop going on Disney Cruises and keeping shows tickets for yourself. Pay us our Benjamin's incentive.

    Pros

    Cons

    Learning about areas of NYC

    Advice to Management

    Rewarding employees for working hard...

I worked at Continental Guest Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunities to work in different large and small Manhattan hotels, sometimes independently.
Opportunities to understand the rhythm and pace of large and small hotels.

    Cons

Concierges earn a LOT of money for company selling very inflated Broadway tickets to hotel guests. Concierges receive ZERO in commission and are provided no incentives. Company does not encourage team building. Does not encourage concierges to attend Concierge Events thrown by venues for our information and perks.

    Advice to Management

Provide commission to concierges above their base hourly rate. Allow concierges to receive direct perks from restaurants and establishments we send people to.

I worked at Continental Guest Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Very fun co-workers
    - You get to know the city very well
    - Some decent incentives, like occasional theatre tickets, though not nearly as much as a "real" concierge
    - A good job if you're a quick thinker and don't get stressed out too easily
    - Some of your guests are very interesting people

    Cons

    - Lack of upward mobility
    - Pay has decreased. Can be offset by tips if you're at one of the few hotels that has a tipping crowd.
    - Inflexibility in schedule, despite promises to the contrary in initial interviews
    - Management tends to take employees for granted and lying is a real problem with them
    - Selling very overpriced theatre tickets to mostly unsuspecting guests
    - Poor benefits package
    - Very little reason to work hard. Lazy workers have access to the same lack of perks as strong sellers.

Bottom line: Not too bad a job, especially if you enjoy hospitality, connecting with people and are good at sales. There is a high turn over rate though as people just get sick of the lack of real growth, a management team that leaves a lot to be desired, and a salary ceiling that can't be broken. If you can get work directly as a concierge in a hotel the perks, pay, and benefits are much, much better. If not, this isn't the worst place to go. Just try and enjoy the ride as much as possible and get out ASAP the moment something better comes along.

    Advice to Management

    Stop lying all the time!
Give people real, constant incentive to stay.
Top sellers should be getting a small percentage of their sales.
Pay should be marginally increasing with as cost of living rises, not the opposite direction.

I worked at Continental Guest Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is actually pretty good. When tips are good, they add greatly to your income. Many people you work with are fun and just great people. Many of the middle managers are decent good people to work with.

    Cons

The big boss is a bit self absorbed, egocentric. You do have to sell your soul a little with the job since you are sometimes being a ruthless salesman hawking overpriced tickets tickets to tourists. Company keeps way to many of the incentives that are meant for employees. Company tries to blackmail companies and restaurants and has it out for those that do not want to kneel before them. You do not want to get on managements bad side. There are a select number of employees who are horrible people and they will stab you in the back any chance they get. There is a lot of favoritism which can determine your scheduling and locations.

    Advice to Management

    Chill out!!!

    Pros

Get to meet a lot of great people! It is a wonferful interim place to work for if you need flexibility with your schedule...ie actors/students.

    Cons

Very difficult to advance or get raises (they do not exist). Concierge position, but it's really a sales job.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice to have a company party of some sorts at the end of the year or bring back bonuses!
