I worked at Continental full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Large profitable company, ability for global travel, best practices in manufacturing as well great training if you take the time to sign up. Management is flexible, and PTO is and work from home is great. Leaders are great mentors if you ask for their help

    Cons

Large German company, hard to get things through, not a lot of movement lateral or upwards as they are a very lean company after the 2009 downturn

    Advice to Management

Keep it up keep sharing the great innovation at town halls, get rid of the managers that are bullys

    Pros

Start out at 17 days PTO, good 401k and good pay

    Cons

Culture is a problem. Company is too big and German management. Always looking how to stimulate German economy over U.S and development of German people.

    Pros

Free lunch, clean work area with large windows, free snacks and sodas

    Cons

Continental San Jose ITS is one of the worst top employers that on my 20 year career in the Silicon Valley I had ever experienced a high degree of a hostile and horrible working place. There are no resources available to do your job, no materials, expect to pay out of pocket and not be reimbursed with the excuse "the German Corporate office says its out of policy so therefore you won't be reimbursed". You are... expected to deliver without knowing what is the product or the deliverable assigned to you?. Human Resources is a bunch of warm bodies collecting a pay check, useless, the CEO of ITS is another warm body sitting inside an office giving dirty looks to whom walks by, nothing more, the ITS Management have the management skills of a fifth grader, their communication method is yell and place all the blame on the ones that won't yell back.

    Advice to Management

Can't give advise to management when there is absolutely not one intelligent person titled manager that would comprehend the word "people are the assets of the company, the contributions of the employees is the success of a company not management alone, therefore first start there by treating your assets (employees) with respect and professionalism regardless of their gender. Human resources be there for the... employees, walking around the building brain washing the employees not to file a grievance when they have one is un-ethical so Corporate doesn't find out of your incompetence and the incompetence of the management at the San Jose site.

I worked at Continental full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Free food - HR caring about gender equality - Great work life balance, (since you are not delivering much tangible outcome)

    Cons

    - No product vision or strategy. This place is just a marketing prop for Continental corporation to say that they have "silicon valley operation" and "startup entrepreneurship" on paper. - Middle management doesn't know what they are doing. Thus, they have no idea of how to evaluate anyone's contribution and performance. Plenty of good people left with frustration of not being recognized and not being able to... deliver customer value. In the meanwhile, plenty of people whose day-to-day job is just sitting there and browsing the internet are comfortably collecting a paycheck. - Horrible leadership from top down. Things could have been changed with new leadership, but it's an unknown. The best thing the German headquarter had done to this ITS division so far is to let the original executives go, after the employees had to endure moral harassment and embarrassment for 2 years without any directions. The worst thing German headquarter had done to ITS is to hire those executives from Google in the first place. - Rigid culture and not enough diversity. Middle management here tend to refer and hire their own family members and friends on the team. It can be very dangerous.

I worked at Continental full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Free food, nice but poorly managed and maintained building

    Cons

This orphan child of the Continental family is an apparent experiment, along the lines of a botched lobotomy. Someone in Hanover, or Detroit should take a long hard look at the rotation of employees in this location, and count how many people since its inception, particularly women, have left. A revolving door in the front entrance would be a useful addition at this stage. The pretty building, free snacks and... food, what Continental believe is ‘Silicon Valley‘ takes precedence over building and employee safety and security. It’s also a shockingly thin veneer to the dysfunction lurking beneath. Management are impotent, but it is the structure they find themselves in that’s at fault more than anything. The layers of German bureaucracy to get simple things done, on top of the location not being an HQ renders employees useless. There was clearly no thought that putting a location in San Jose, operations would have to be entirely different. There is an environment of mistrust and the rot has set in.

    Advice to Management

Stop, look, see what is really going on. Hire a local professional HR and Operations team. Customize processes and polices to suit the local environment, the old German regime does not work here. Give your managers real authority to act and make real time decisions.

I have been working at Continental for more than 10 years

    Pros

Salary is good for this area.

    Cons

Hostile working environment - beating will continue until morale improves. Generally work in fear. 1980s hub mentality / strategy Office 5S - nothing personal on or in desk. Audits allow persons to open locked personal drawers and flippers. Depressing work environment. General disapproval of Americans and females from German management. Upper management can turn irate, hostile, and belittling to anyone in the... facility.

    Pros

Good salaries, Good benefits, great people in the North American HQ, ability to transfer between divisions/groups, well defined individual appraisal system,

    Cons

Some issues with the German managers when they do a stint in the United States. Basically just a culture thing. The company is a little impersonal when dealing with you on an individual basis.

    Advice to Management

Better orientation for European mgmt transfers

I have been working at Continental full-time for more than a year

    Pros

This review is for the Carpinteria, CA location. The work/life balance here is very good, no one will bother you about work when you are not in the office. The location of the office and its vicinity to the ocean and nature is incredible. There are subsidized lunches once or twice a week which is nice. Weekly volleyball and every once in a while BBQ after work. Vacation days and holidays are good, you get an... extended break during Christmas/New Years. Benefits are also very good. You get yearly profit sharing and variable compensation which can add to a lot of money. Gym reimbursement, although the choice of places is very limited.

    Cons

Where to begin. To understand some of the problems a little history is necessary. This was a local Lidar company in Santa Barbara (ASC) that Continental bought. Continental is a big international company, but you get a feeling that the German colleagues are preferred over others (look at the board members and you get an idea) so of course a bunch of German engineers/managers who were eager for promotions were sent... to this location for the transition. The cultural gap really didn't help during the transition period and there were problems right off the bat. The original engineers that really knew the technology hated how things were, to a point that just after a year the main hardware guys from ASC all quit so I'm not sure how the next generations of this lidar sensor would be successfully developed. The upper management at Continental is eager to ship all the jobs it can to countries where they don't have to pay as much money and you are told that your salary is too high compared to them so this is justified. In the time I've been at conti, I've seen most of the hardware/software components shipped out to other places for the sake of saving money on paper. Most of these places are on different time zones with some not having any overlapping working hours. To make things worse, you have no power over the other teams in other countries as they have other bosses and also other tasks from other branches. This creates an incredibly inefficient system, where it takes forever to get something done, and when it's done it better not have any bugs/issues because resolving them takes even longer. So you end up tracking other people's work, and conti has actually created a lot of positions specifically for this reason, track what others do and bug them until they do it. A lot of smart people who were hired to do real work are used for this, and you can see that they are not happy about it and are already looking elsewhere for employment including myself. The management has mentioned that this is Conti's most expensive branch to keep open so I really wonder how long more it will be here once all the components can be done elsewhere. I really would not recommend this branch to anyone. I can go on and on about the problems but this should be enough to help smart candidates stay away. Too bad the top managers at this branch don't even care as they are on temporary expat contracts so they can just go back to where they came from, or to another branch where they can focus on collecting their big bonuses while it lasts.

    Advice to Management

No advice for the management. In my opinion they are salesmen who are under-qualified to lead research and development of such a cutting edge technology.

I worked at Continental for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits, medical, dental and vision. Market competitive salary. Corporate advancement opportunities. Flexible scheduling allows for a good work life balance.

    Cons

Management does not listen to employees concerns or suggestions. In the division I was in, US automakers were at best fourth on the priority list behind the German 3. Mis-directed responsibilities across departments.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. There is a great deal of talent and experience in the field that is very knowledgeable about the markets they serve. Headquarters is not always right.

I worked at Continental full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Flexibility to be empowered to act (within reason). There are some good low level managers. Non-management personnel in other divisions are very willing to be helpful and network and assist, this will be your greatest asset.

    Cons

Corporation is owned by German counterparts. Internal atmosphere has presence that pushes if your origins aren't from Europe then you are a lesser being. Not open to collective ideas unless its their own. Local US side management isn't bad until you start going up the ladder then it degrades. Wanting values only of their own and will expect you to reduce your ethics to met their agendas. Very disappointed. Will be... brought in with all kinds of ideas and values only to find it is just a front. Conform or else. (German management will frown on division interaction, very silo thinking internal competition amongst divisions)

    Advice to Management

Keep open mind others ideas and values. Remove the internal us vs them on divisions. Remove the click atmosphere and promote based on abilities and accomplishments from any Country. Respect the knowledge others bring to the table from other jobs\corporations. There is success outside of Continental utilize others success stories and abilities.
