I worked at Contra Costa Community College District part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong teacher's union, which means good benefits and salary, even for adjunct faculty at the school. Nice people in the Biology department, they love what they do and the students really respond. Good amount of autonomy as an adjunct instructor. All faculty are great resources and willing to share materials

    Cons

Not great hours if you are an adjunct like me. Teaching night/evening classes. No pay for grading or admin as an adjunct (though the hourly pay is great compared to other non-unionized community colleges nationwide).

    Advice to Management

Continue allowing faculty to have a voice, continue to recruit full-timers who appreciate adjunct work and are supportive of their team members. Small classes capped at 26 was key in ensuring all students (many who are high-risk of not continuing in college) get the attention they deserve.

I worked at Contra Costa Community College District part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people who genuinely care about the students and their success.

    Cons

Greatly rely on hourly work instead of filling much needed full-time permanent positions.

    Advice to Management

Open more positions so it does not feel like working in a revolving door having to train new individuals every few months.

I worked at Contra Costa Community College District as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ability to easily transition into different departments and different job positions. You will be blessed to learn on the job and will be cross-trained to work different positions in various campuses.

    Cons

The only downside is working as an hourly employee especially in recent years. Hourly hours have been drastically reduced due to budget cuts.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep your top hourly employees happy by compensating them with extra hours/ openings when available, rather than have office politics mar basic essential values.

Take more anonymous surveys more often.
