I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time

    Pros

Lots of on-the-job training; great, positive work environment with many extra-professional activities, mostly good benefits.

    Cons

Slow pace, scant communication between upper management (directors) and lower-level employees, health insurance relatively expensive. Highly bureaucratic as can be expected in a government workplace.

    Man of the supervisors micromanage.

I worked at Contra Costa County - California (Less than a year)

    Pros

Where dull minds go to retire; atmosphere like the walking dead sets

    Cons

Bad Management; absent systems; moronic daily schedules; everyone always on vacation or leave once they pass probation. A daily view would be like a ghost ship rather than a functioning office. Really- I've never worked in such a "office" where everyone is trying to look really busy - but not.

    Advice to Management

Go away or try to work with the TRUMP administration; There is a reason why you have to call people 3 or 4 times with job offers. No one stays!!!!!!

  5. "Good workplace, minimal to average compensation"

Compensation is below average to average, depending on department.

I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

FP based program. Bernie Sanders bumper stickers in parking lot.

    Cons

Little to no respect for physicians, especially primary care. Nursing occupies top 90% of management positions and enforce maddening regulatory policies (no bottled water at your desk!) Low pay. Lots of unpaid OT. No new contract in sight after 2 years (took 4 years last time), They save money by endlessly prolonging negotiations.

    Advice to Management

You seem to live in an Administrative Gated Community.

It's difficult to fire anyone so there are many employees resistant to change

    Advice to Management

Hold employees to higher accountability to discourage poor performance

I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are 30 and not a Progressive, you don't have a heart. You will meet many big-hearted people here. The patients are very grateful. Some days you feel like you make a difference.

    Cons

Generally high stress. Salaries are well below average. You won't be able to pay your student loans without moonlighting else-where. The chances that you will qualify for loan repayment are very small. There is no maternity leave. There is no significant retirement plan for new hires. Health insurance is relatively expensive. You probably won't be able to buy a house. There is no limit to the number of patients you will be assigned and many don't speak English (there are translators), You will work a great deal of unpaid OT. It has been difficult to hire more MDs to share the work.

    Advice to Management

We often joke that the County is like a talking dog. The amazing thing isn't what it says, it's that it talks at all. The staff is pretty resigned that it's hopeless.
