I worked at Convio full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I was there for ~1.5 years prior to and 6 months after the BlackBaud purchase. While I was there: great teammates and lots of talent, and I worked for 2 really great directors. The excellent HR group had honest work/life balance and personal/professional growth philosophies and initiatives. I really loved working there with my team. We cared about the success of our clients and we proud to be helping them.

    Cons

BlackBaud management was undeservedly arrogant, more or less tone deaf and far too proud of their outdated flagship product to be taken seriously. They made money, but not by really helping their clients or being much of a technology company. I was really disappointed Convio was sold to them.

    Advice to Management

When I heard the CEO and CTO of BlackBaud at the time of the sale were no longer there, I was not unhappy. Don't be like they were.

I worked at Convio full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

My time at Convio was the most rewarding seven years in my professional career. Some of the high points.

    Passionate and intelligent employees
The privilege of helping non-profits change the world
    Amazing leadership team

    Cons

The single low point was that we were bought out by our largest competitor BlackBaud. Within the space of a year most of the talent had left the company.

I worked at Convio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great management team, great causes, great causes, good vision, good work environment

    Cons

As a small public company our growth options were somewhat limited

    Advice to Management

    Don't get acquired by Blackbaud

I worked at Convio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People are friendly. Work-life balance is very good. Employees are encouraged to volunteer and supported in these efforts.

    Cons

Poor management across many different departments, and there is blatant cronyism: those who are in the inner circle and those who are not.

    Advice to Management

Up the level of professionalism, especially at the management level, and promote a more open culture.

I worked at Convio full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My first real career job. I learned most of what I know about SCRUM and Agile there. Great pay. Helpful coworkers and a great motivational boss.

    Cons

I didn't have many cons. Maybe more office spaces rather than cubes?

I worked at Convio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Community feel, real regard for employees, sense of doing good.

    Cons

First the growing pains of the IPO and then the surprise takeover by blackbaud that changed the entire feel.

    Advice to Management

Value your customers, value your employees. Corporate attitude and NPOs don't mix.

I worked at Convio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Convio had very strong senior leadership, a great mission with a reasonable work/life balance and a well organized workspace with decent benefits and salaries.

    Cons

The company tended to be balkanized and highly political. The company always felt that it was solely on a march to get investors paid out. Budgets were squeezed to force teams to make do with less, particularly when it came to supporting customer needs. Middle management was mostly weak and suffered from too many revolving door hires from the local tech scene.

    Advice to Management

My advice would no longer be relevant since the acquisition by Blackbaud.

I have been working at Convio full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Having worked for some of the top rated employers in the country (Alcon) and worst, I can say with certainty that Convio was a great company to work for, but is evolving rapidly, to include the workplace dynamic. While there, the company had passed it's early growing pains, but was still family-like in its feel, with fantastic benefits and emphasis put on employee happiness and care. Convio was Now

    Cons

Convio was recently acquired by Blackbaud, which is sure to change the workplace dynamics and priorities, whether for better or worse.

    Advice to Management

Continue to hire the best qualified individuals and empower them to perform, rather than hiring the more affordable employees and asking them to conform.
