I have been working at Cook County Health and Hospitals System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Patient population difficult, but their gratitude is worth it.
Staff working hard to improve customer service, provide a positive image of the hospital, and actually do enjoy working here.

    Cons

Conquering the negative history of the hospital with extended waiting time to get seen in ER, clinics, etc.....this truly has changed over the last few years.

I have been working at Cook County Health and Hospitals System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very dedicated staff. Mission-driven. Very diverse workforce and leadership. Quality of care is good given all the challenges. Great non-monetary benefits (reasonable hours, health insurance, work for a place that helps people who need it, etc). If you're lucky enough to be in a union and can stay a long time, pensions are super.

    Cons

Salaries are sometimes below market (which means some people are contract employees to get paid market rates). Employment timing is very slow (months longer than anyplace else) due to all the protections against nepotism and political favoritism. It can be hard to wait to hear about a County job. The bureaucracy of a large government organization and scarce resources make change slow. There are some (few) long-term employees who are not motivated and (usually lower levels) that can make it harder to improve things.

I have been working at Cook County Health and Hospitals System full-time

    Pros

Good benefits for the seniority people. Nor longer is there a good pension for the new people coming in.

    Cons

County is very unethical and they do not treat their employees well at all. If you want to make an improvement, you will not do it here. Very political. They waste tons of money that our tax payers have to pay and many managers don't even know what they are doing and/or don't even care or play favoritism. but they for sure will get rid of the little people and keep their corrupt management. I would not recommend working for County unless you do not care about growing to achieve better. Go private where they know how to treat employees well and you can get promoted by merit. Also, majority of all people there are black and the same with the union.
