I worked at Corbis full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working with many of the staff there was the most enjoyable aspect of the job during the 9 years I was there.

    Cons

I (and many others there) disagreed with many (most?) of the decisions made by upper management in regards to their direction of the company. Nonetheless, we supported their choices once they were made.

    Advice to Management

Although company has changed (Images group has been sold) the senior management still exists and needs to recognize their strengths and weaknesses.

I worked at Corbis (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with were pretty great. The photographers/contributors were of high caliber, and we lost a lot of them because they were sadly not treated very well at the hands of upper management. The people in the trenches had a passion for photography and really tried so hard to make the business work. Unfortunately.....

    Cons

I don't think the CEO was ever really that interested in the images side of the business, and so slowly starved it of any real funding and support to make a positive difference in being able to sell and grow the images side of the business. Poor economy and changing times is an excuse for only so long, as evidenced by other agencies doing a lot better job of selling images even today. Since selling off Corbis Images to VCG, the CEO has closed the Seattle office entirely and moved everything to LA, the Entertainment Capital of the World, to focus on Entertainment offerings, which I think is what he wanted all along. Sadly he accomplished his goal at the expense of a lot of people's jobs. Such is life, I suppose.

    Advice to Management

None. The damage is done. Hopefully the Entertainment side will be able to carry on. I'd hate to see any more people lose their jobs.

  5. "Incompetent CEO or Lay-Offs Are NOT a Long Term Strategy!"

    Pros

    - Regular employees were great
    - Environment was relaxed ,could work from home

    Cons

    - Middle to Upper Management was terrible
    - CEO was completely incompetent, feckless and had no discernible vision- CEO was a complete idiot.
    - Company focus and direction changed every 6 months
    - Constant regular layoffs, instead of a real strategy and direction, which gradually over the years eroded all morale and enthusiasm anyone had for the company
    - They thought company social gatherings would offset the obliteration of morale caused by the idiotic choice to have constant layoffs...it did not
    - Regular laying off senior people so they can keep less-experienced people with lower salaries...which of course hurt the efficiency of the company as you were left with a less experienced staff (DUH!)
    - Ageism (see the above item)
    - A requirement for all management seemed to be the ability to make the worst decisions possible
    - CEO retained position due to white male privilege despite years and years of complete failure and incompetence while regular workers were regularly laid off for doing great work

    Advice to Management

Well...Garey Shenk ran the company into the ground and now it's been sold..
    Only two items of advice
    1) STICK WITH DAMNED STRATEGY FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES
    2) LAYOFFS ARE NOT A VIABLE LONG-TERM STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS! ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CUT ALL THE EXPERIENCED PEOPLE!

Co-workers were great but exhausted. The company had been through a few layoffs and it was beginning to take its toll on the employees.

    Cons

The stock images business was doomed to fail at the moment the company first decided to not invest in the website.

    Advice to Management

You sold the company so...No advice from me.
